State investigates Internet porn, hidden camera on ferries
10:41 AM PDT on Friday, March 14, 2008
MUKILTEO, Wash. - State ferry officials are investigating allegations that a worker used wireless onboard computers in a ferry pilot house to view pornography on the Internet.
Officials also said Thursday that the Washington State Patrol is conducting a separate criminal investigation after a surveillance camera was found hidden in an employee-only restroom on the ferry Cathlamet.
Each incident involved complaints from ferry workers against other crew members and are being treated as personnel matters, said Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Marta Coursey.
Hard drives were removed this month from wireless computers in the pilot houses of the ferries Kittitas and Cathlamet, which operate between Mukilteo and Clinton, for scanning by state Transportation Department computer technicians in Olympia, Coursey said.
According to The Herald of Everett, which cited an unidentified source, the probe began after a ferry worker refused to work in the pilot house, accusing a captain of creating a hostile work environment by viewing porn over the wireless Internet connection. Coursey would not comment on specifics of the probe.
The surveillance camera investigation began roughly three months ago after one engine room employee accused another of installing the device in a restroom not accessible to the public.
After finding the camera, ferry officials contacted the patrol to investigate.
A ferry system employee has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is under way, Coursey said. No arrests have been made.
