Sen. Maria Cantwell

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Last week, a Republican poll showed Sen. Maria Cantwell with just an eight point lead over her likely GOP challenger, Mike McGavick. Now independent pollster Stuart Elway reports Cantwell with a runaway 30-point lead.

Elway's poll shows 55 percent are definitely voting for Cantwell or inclined to do so. Another 25 percent are inclined or definitely voting McGavick's way. Elway interviewed 405 voters by phone in early February. The poll has a margin of error plus or minus five percentage points.

Elway said his polls show Cantwell's popularity gaining over the past five years and that the state is "darker blue" this year. Elway says that, so far, McGavick hasn't shown voters a compelling reason to dump Cantwell.
