Washington passenger ferry for sale on eBay

02:23 PM PST on Saturday, February 16, 2008

Associated Press

SEATTLE - In the market for a passenger ferry? Check eBay.

Washington State Ferries has put the mothballed passenger ferry Chinook up for sale on the popular Internet auction site. The ferry has sat idle for the last four years.

The ferry was put on sale late Thursday night with an asking price of at least $4.5 million and will remain on sale until Feb. 24.

The state wants to give money from the sale of the Chinook to a government entity looking to operate their own passenger ferry service. King County may get most of the proceeds to pay for a Seattle-to-Vashon passenger run, but the Port of Kingston may also bid for the Chinook money.

This is the second time the state has tried to sell a boat on eBay. In 2003, the ferry Tyee sold to a Florida boat broker for $560,000.
