Six indicted in extensive ID theft scheme in Bellevue
02:51 PM PST on Wednesday, February 7, 2007
BELLEVUE, Wash. - Six people have been indicted for their part in an extensive ID theft scheme that used personal information obtained by insiders at a Bellevue mortgage company and escrow firm.
The suspects are accused of taking over victims' bank accounts and draining them, then opening up new bank accounts in the victims' names and running up thousands of dollars in bills. In total, police have linked $335,000 in fraud to the conspiracy.
The accused ring leaders of the scheme, Charles Griffin, 35, of Federal Way, and Bianca Bowler, 29, of Seattle, were arrested Wednesday morning. If convicted, they could face up to 30 years in prison.
According to the indictment, Griffin and Bowler recruited two conspirators, one at a mortgage company and another at an escrow firm, who provided the victims' personal financial information. They recruited two other co-conspirators to make counterfeit drivers licenses so they could pose as the bank account holders to drain the accounts. They also opened credit accounts in the victims' names and racked up huge charges at numerous stores.
Some of the suspects are already serving length prison terms for fraud and identity theft.
The arrests are the result of an 18-month joint investigation with the Social Security Office, the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Servide, the U.S. Probation, and the Lynnwood Police.
