War memorial complicates plans to revamp Seattle Center

05:30 PM PST on Thursday, January 24, 2008

Public asked for input

SEATTLE - The public is being asked for input on four plans to renovate the aging Seattle Center.

A meeting was scheduled for tonight at the Lopez Room at the Seattle Center starting 6:30 p.m., and a committee hopes to present a master plan to the Seattle City Council in March.

The biggest controversy is whether to tear down Memorial Stadium and replace it with an amphitheater and parking lot. But a memorial wall at the stadium that displays the names of Seattle high school students who died in World War II has become a major part of the controversy.

Marianne Hanson was 17 years old when she wrote the words engraved on the wall at the stadium entrance - words honoring Seattle high school students who died in the war. Hanson expects the stadium itself is headed for demolition or dramatic renovation, but she hopes the wall that was built 58 years ago will be preserved.

"I would hate to see something happen like, well we'll find a place for it and it ends up in a storage shed and then it gets forgotten, that would be terrible," she said.

The stadium is showing its age, especially in the stands and locker rooms. Several of the plans being proposed by Seattle Center and the Century 21 committee involve tearing it down.

But center director Robert Nellams says that doesn't include the wall.

"Every one of our plans if you look at it closely, you'll see 'memorial wall,'" he said.

But veterans and Seattle activists argue saving the wall isn't enough. People want the stadium preserved because it's more than a place for football or concerts - it's a war memorial.

While there's a lot of disagreement over what should be done with this stadium, everyone seems to agree on this much: The wall isn't being well maintained. The hedges have grown too high and it's not lit, so you can barely read the names.
