Blaze guts Lynnwood furniture store

02:03 PM PST on Thursday, January 18, 2007

LYNNWOOD, Wash. - It was a bad start for the day for the owner of a Lynnwood furniture store that went up in flames early Thursday morning.

The two-alarm fire at the Furniture World store in the 19200 block along Highway 99 closed a portion of the highway during the morning commute.

Store owner Jeff Raymond estimates the fire will cost him $100,000 in damage. He says it's the second time in a week something bad has happened to his business.

"A couple days ago, we had our delivery truck tire popped, slit and all the windows broken out," said Raymond.  "It could be related I don't know."

Flames are scene coming from a 2-alarm fire at the Furniture World store in Lynnwood, WA.

Firefighters arrived at his store around 3:30 a.m. after a security alarm went off and police found the building engulfed in flames.

"The security alarm could have meant anything. It could mean we had smoke in the building and set off a motion detector. It also means there could have been someone in there. It's too soon to speculate," said Leroy McNaulty, Lynnwood Fire Marshall.

A couple of neighbors said they'd seen transient activity in the back of the back of the building in recent days.

At the peak, 48 firefighters from Lynnwood, Edmonds and Fire District 1 battled the blaze for several hours before knocking it out. Rain helped their effort to keep the flames from spreading to adjacent businesses, but the Furniture World store is a complete loss.

Raymond isn't sure what he'll do next.

"We'd like to rebuild or relocate," said Raymond. "We've been doing furniture our whole lives."

The Lynnwood Fire Department said no victims were found inside the wreckage. Raymond also said he had a new electrical system put in just last year and that the fire will not affect the other Furniture World store in Marysville.
