Woman tasered on I-90 after charging at state trooper

12:51 PM PST on Wednesday, January 2, 2008

SEATTLE, Wash. – A Washington State Trooper fired his Taser at a woman who was walking along Interstate 90 Wednesday morning and allegedly lunged at the trooper when he approached her.

The state patrol says it happened around 6:30 a.m. when drivers started calling 911 to report a pedestrian walking near the fog line in the right lane of westbound I-90 near the floating bridge.  The 37-year-old Seattle woman was not walking in the designated pedestrian/bicycle lane.

When the trooper pulled up and turned on his lights, the woman then hopped over the concrete barrier and onto the pedestrian path.

The state patrol says when the trooper tried to talk to the woman, she suddenly turned towards him then jumped back onto the roadway and started screaming at the trooper, who then called for backup.

Then the woman started charging at the trooper while still screaming, causing the trooper to fire his taser, hitting the woman.

The pedestrian was taken into custody and transported to Harborview Medical Center for a mental evaluation.

Wednesday's incident comes just over a week since a state trooper was forced to shoot and kill a man along Interstate 5 in Federal Way.  Police say 28-year-old Aaron Larson jumped out of a vehicle, took off his pants and started swinging his belt at passing cars.  He was shot by a trooper after a Taser failed to subdue him.  That incident is still under investigation.  The trooper is on administrative leave.
