Clark deputies kill armed man near Orchards

08:22 AM PDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Associated Press

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Clark County sheriff's SWAT officers shot and killed a man during a standoff near Orchards.

A spokesman, Sgt. Scott Schanaker, says the man had threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and himself. She escaped and called 911.

Deputies found the man at his brother's home, where he had been staying.

Schanaker says officers saw the man in the backyard, holding a gun to his head. Negotiatiors tried to persuade him to surrender.

The Vancouver Columbian reports the standoff ended just after midnight, early Wednesday, with shots fired. No officers were injured.

The shooting will be investigated by major crimes detectives with the sheriff's office and Vancouver Police Department.
