Police officer's home gutted in fire

04:42 PM PDT on Tuesday, June 26, 2007

By RAY LANE / KING 5 News

The homeowner was at his brother's house when the fire started.

ORTING, Wash. – A Milton, Wash. police officer's home in Orting was destroyed by a fire late Monday night.

Firefighters say the intense heat ignited ammunition stored in the officer's patrol fire, causing violent noise.

"It was like fireworks going off in there," said neighbor Debbie Hansen.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage, at 19826 207th St. Ct. E., in Orting. The officer's patrol car, a police motorcycle and his personal car were destroyed, but the fire did not spread to other homes.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters are investigating what caused the blaze.

The police officer was at his brother's home down the street when the fire started.

Hansen, who lives next door, was already asleep when the fire started. She said her dogs started having a fit and she thought her own house was on fire at first.

"When I looked out the window I just saw some flames coming out of the top of the garage," she said. "And then after that there were a lot of explosions... And embers were hitting the top of my roof."

Firefighters responded to the call at roughly 10:30 p.m.

Other neighbors in the relatively new, dense neighborhood feared the fire was going to quickly spread and cut off their escape route.

"You couldn't get out. We couldn't get our cars and get out," said Kathleen Brunatti. "Things were exploding and stuff. It was very scary. I took my grandson to go down the walking path because I thought it might go from house to house."
