EVERETT, Wash. - For many kids, school starts in less than two weeks.

They need school supplies, but the tough economic times are putting a strain on family budgets.

The average cost of school supplies for each child can range from $50 all the way up to $100.

So some organizations are stepping in to help.

With local businesses and the community's help, the south Everett Foursquare Church gathered 517 new backpacks and filled them with supplies for its Start Out Right program. On Saturday they handed them out to low income families who live nearby.

According to the church, more than 70 percent of the people who live in the area are considered low income.

"It's impacting, you know, the middle class as well as this area south of Everett. They are really hurting," said Sally Cassidy, school counselor.

The need has increased dramatically. They handed out twice as many backpacks as last year.
