The Whatcom County sheriff's office says members of the climbing party notified authorities of the accident about 11 p.m. Friday.

It occurred near the party's campsite in the Squauk Glacier area on the south side of the mountain, a volcano that is 10,778 feet tall in the North Cascades east of Bellingham.

The sheriff's office says volunteers from the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council and Whatcom County Snowmobile Club worked yesterday to remove the body.

Details about how the victim became trapped under the boulder, and the victim's name, age and hometown, were not immediately released.

The death came three days after 31-year-old Eduard Burceag, of Bellevue, died when he and two others were trapped in a blizzard on Mount Rainier, another Cascade Range volcano 130 miles south of Mount Baker.
