Investigators: New claim of molestation by Eastside cult

11:42 AM PDT on Tuesday, September 5, 2006

By CHRIS INGALLS / KING 5 News

SEATTLE - New criminal charges have been filed against members of a secretive religious sect in the suburbs east of Seattle. A 16-year old victim has come forward, claiming he was molested by church members.

After decades of running from the law and controversy in other cities, about 100 members of the Tridentine Church have lived for several years in obscurity in the suburbs east of Seattle.

This young victim and his family were long-time members who left the group sometime after KING 5’s original story aired. He's now the second boy to claim that he was molested. The church leaders knew about it but did little to stop it.

At the Tridentine Latin Rite church, church elders strictly control members’ dress, daily routine  and contact with the world outside. But two boys say they were molested inside a house near Issaquah, the Tridentine's former home for male church members.

“I trusted these people to take care of my son,” the victim’s mother said. “I trusted them and they were supposed to be men of God."

But the KING 5 Investigators have uncovered troubling evidence that some members aren't following the law here on earth.

The former Tridentine's 13-year old son was the first to come forward with molestation allegations. The latest accuser is naming the same three young men charged or convicted in that case, according to charging documents obtained by the KING 5 investigators.

Steve Belzak pled guilty to child sexual abuse last year. Justin Kirkland is awaiting trial on a child rape charge, and Michael Muratore on a charge of child molestation.

The charging documents do not mention Francis Shuckardt, the Tridentine leader who former members say considers himself the one true pope although he was long-ago condemned by the Catholic church.

But the documents do include claims that as early as 1996 Tridentine leaders knew of molestation by several teenagers in the church and failed to stop it.

Many families are desperate to get loved ones of all ages out of the Tridentine church. One family's attempted to bring their elderly mother, Kathleen Raleigh, home to her ailing husband. But she wouldn't speak to her husband and returned to the church. She later appeared on NBC's Dateline, saying her children abducted her.

The King County Sheriff's department says it's still trying to determine if there could be other young victims in the group.

No Tridentine spokesperson was available for comment.

Tridentine is a Catholic term, used for other legitimate Catholic groups but this group, the Tridentine Latin Rite Church, has no affiliation with the Catholic church.
