Investigators: Customers wronged by contractor get surprise help

Surprise help for wronged customers

EATONVILLE, Wash. - He left behind a trail of shoddy work, unfinished jobs and overcharges.

KING 5 exposed local contractor Earl Brischle in an investigation in May.

Since then, homeowners have continued to report they were victimized by the contractor.

It is now believed his gutter company has shut down, and another company has offered to help customers like Suzanne Vineyard.

Nine months after Brischle's gutters were installed on her home, they are being torn down.

Not only did the "clog free" gutters clog and leak, she was overcharged - $2,400.

When Mitchell Reed saw Vineyard's story on KING 5, he offered his company's help.

His company is called Leaf Filter.

"We committed to do the gutters as a company gift, all of our installers said we'll throw in the time," Reed said.

"It's just really wonderful, just really awesome," Vineyard said.

In Eatonville, Wash., gutters are also coming down at the home of Bob and Kristy Mitchell.

Like Vineyard, the Mitchells thought they were buying a known product, but they got a cheaper knockoff and their refund check bounced.

They're also thrilled Leaf Filter has come out to right a wrong they had nothing to do with.

"Makes you have faith in people again," Bob Mitchell said.

Brischle is the man behind the trail of shoddy work, unfinished jobs and overcharges.

He's not new to KING 5 -- the Investigators exposed him seven years ago for selling deceptive travel club memberships.

He's been sued twice by the attorney general's office. In 2001 the state even won a $2.6 million judgment against him and his company for consumer fraud.

Linda Byron, KING 5: "You don't seem surprised to find Earl Brischle back on the radar screen, doing this in another industry."

Doug Walsh, Consumer protection division chief: "Our division has had significant contact with Mr. Brischle, that is true and it continues to this day."

When we tracked down Brischle last month, he claimed to be someone else and rushed away.

Thanks to Leaf Filter, the story has a happy ending for Suzanne Vineyard and the Mitchells.
