Investigators:Animals seized from jailed kennel owner

12:08 PM PDT on Saturday, June 23, 2007

By KIM HOLCOMB / KING 5 News

15 dogs that were under Greatsinger's care are now in custody.

TACOMA, Wash. - From small puppies to full grown great danes, dogs that once lived inside a Pierce County kennel now occupy several cages at the humane society.

The animals were seized Thursday and the woman who owns them was arrested.

Breeder Jackie Greatsinger was booked into jail for theft, in what we've learned is just the latest in a string of criminal investigations.

KING 5 first reported about Greatsinger last year as she sold dogs over the internet. We uncovered numerous cases of dogs becoming gravely ill, and in some instances, dying.

"Three or four years, we've been aware of her," said Debbie Davidson.  Her organization, "Dane Outreach, now hopes to place some of the confiscated dogs in foster homes.

"First you get really mad, and it's really sad to think of what the dogs are going through."

Greatsinger, also known as Bernadette Vohs, appeared in court Friday afternoon.  She was told no charges have been filed, but they're pending.

KING 5 has learned she's also being investigated by the pierce county sheriff's office for six other fraud complaints dating back to January of 2006.

Files and a computer removed from her home could provide evidence.

The prosecutor handling the latest case says eventually, they may all be rolled together.

Greatsinger had nothing to say as she left the courtroom.

As for her animals, a veterinarian staff will examine every dog to determine if they need any medical treatment.

It's not clear if cruelty charges will be pursued.

For now, the 15 dogs will remain in county custody as the state works to build a case against their owner.

The prosecutor handling Greatsinger's case says she wasn't charged for any of the earlier complaints because the fraud unit is so backlogged.
