Investigators: Graham kennel owner arrested

10:13 PM PDT on Thursday, June 21, 2007

By KIM HOLCOMB / KING 5 News

Jacki Greatsinger goes by several aliases.

GRAHAM, Wash. – The owner of a kennel near Graham was arrested Thursday on suspicion of operating without a license and fraud.

The suspect, Jacki Greatsinger, who uses other aliases, was at the center of a KING 5 investigation a year ago. She used one of those aliases, Bernadette Vohs, when she was booked into jail Thursday night.

Investigators say the arrest was based on a tip from a kennel customer.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the kennel and found evidence that it was home to numerous dogs. They say many may be there illegally.

"There is no license that has been issued by the county auditor's office to have a commercial kennel operation at this location,' said Tim Anderson, of Pierce County Animal Control.

One of the unhappy customers is Shelley Newman. Her great dane pup died from a heart defect it had since birth. "Our kids had a really hard time with it and still do with leaving our pets alone," said Newman.

KING 5's investigation last year revealed complaints about the suspect's breeding business from across the country and oversees. There were allegations that Great Danes sold as healthy AKC pups grew terribly sick and in many cases – died.

The Great Danes were advertised and sold all over the internet.

At the time, the kennel's operator told KING 5 she had a commercial kennel license.

Thursday, animal control operators said that was no longer true.

"There should be a commercial license at this facility for the number of animals that are here at this point," said Anderson.

A warrant served late Thursday afternoon allowed investigators to inspect the kennel's conditions and the 38 dogs living inside. Several have already been removed

There is no word if the owner will face possible animal cruelty charge.

KING 5's Elisa Hahn contributed to this report.
