Toxic dangers lurking in some Halloween costumes
11:21 AM PDT on Friday, October 12, 2007
SEATTLE – Normally when you talk about Halloween costume safety, the concern is over blocked vision and dark outfits, but with recent recalls of toxic toys, parents should be concerned about other toxic dangers.
KING 5 News bought items from a variety of outlets that offer Halloween goods: Halloween Express, Value Village and Fred Meyer.
We took our bags of goods to The Washington Toxics Coalition, which has a toxin detecting X-ray gun. We started finding lead right away.
A medallion in a package called "Instant Demon," made by Fun World, has 121 parts-per-million in the chain that would go around a child's neck.
We also found lead in "Little Brat" party favors, a pirate sword and in a skull bracelet.

We also found other chemicals in some of the items – chemicals that are associated with toxins like phthalates that are linked to male reproductive and asthma problems.
"I would personally be concerned about a child wearing a PVC mask that they would be getting exposed to phthalates," said Erika Schreder, Washington Toxics Coalition.
And some items contain the dangerous industrial toxin cadmium.
The best advice from the toxics coalition is avoid rubbery masks that often contain phthalates or cadmium or lead.
Be suspicious of heavy jewelry items. Lead is heavy and so are things made of lead.
The good news, most of the very popular fake teeth we tested did pretty well. Some had low levels of phthalates, but overall, they were non-toxic.
Dressing kids up in wigs and water-based makeup seem to be a safe bet.
