SEATTLE – King County plans to add 20 more electric vehicle recharging stations to Metro Transit park-and-ride garages.

The move is part of a county initiative to cut fuel consumption and harmful emissions.

King County Executive Ron Sims says the act supports the growth of a new generation of automobiles. General Motors and Chrysler are unveiling plans to release the first mass-produced, reasonably priced plug-in electric vehicles in the nation.

"The introduction of mass-produced plug-in vehicles is a revolutionary step in transportation," County Councilmember Jane Hague said.

Metro currently offers 120-volt electric outlets at the Eastgate and Issaquah Highlands park-and-ride garages. The new 20 stations will be added to park-and-rides under construction, including the new Redmond Parking Garage and Burien Transit Center.

Metro is also exploring the possibility of offering plug-in vans as part of its VanShare program.

To reward commuters already using plug-in electric vehicles, Metro plans to offer them perks, including reserved parking spots in stalls with electrical outlets.
