Kirkland man leads way with innovative scooter

KIRKLAND, Wash. – A local man is the first on the West Coast to own what some are calling a new wave of highway transportation.
David Denhart showed us the fuel-line on his new motorcycle, and the only outlet he'll need to visit is the one in his garage. No gouging there.
"If I had to totally recharge the battery every day, it's going to cost me about 30 cents," he said.
Denhart is the proud owner of a new Vectrix – a totally electric, zero-emission muscle bike.
He's the first on the West Coast to get one and it's no side-road scooter.
It's got a 62 mph top end and it gets there quickly.
During his test ride he admired its acceleration. He was endeared by its endurance – 60 miles in the city on a single charge.
And he also loves its looks, inspired by flashy Italian bikes.
But what convinced Denhart to buy was the way the Vectrix reflects his own beliefs.
"I like the fact it reduces my dependence on oil," he said. "The fact that it was designed in the United States was also of importance to me. I like to support our country and our economy."
The Vectrix is the latest addition to The Green Car Company of Kirkland's stable of electric and alternative-fuel vehicles. It's being marketed for commuters just like Denhart.
"It's going to be the daily commuter. I have to commute about 10 miles each day each way," he said.
And now he'll do that at an estimated operating cost of 2 cents per mile.
The Vectrix needs very little down time. Its batteries can be recharged in just 2 hours.
