Free Christmas trees for needy families
11:00 PM PST on Thursday, December 18, 2008
We got a call earlier this week from Rick Garlock. He's a tree salesman who said he wanted to give free trees to families.
When asked how many he was willing to give, he said: "Hundreds."
Rick Garlock is a Christmas tree salesman who's done quite well this season.
Now he's forsaking more green by giving away 200 of the trees to the needy.
"Why let a good tree go unappreciated, so we decided no family goes without a tree this year. That's our game," he said.
Rick's a father of four girls and a lifelong Kent resident. His wife Susan says the decision to start the giveaway was an easy one.
"Because it's giving back to the community," she said. "We do business in Kent, we grew up in Kent and we'd like to give back."
"I work with needy families. Do you know somebody we can help? If you do, we'll be open until Sunday," said Rick.
Rick's trying to sell everyone on his new free tree plan which includes handing out candy canes to every child and asking for donations to the Kent food bank.
"That's called completing the loop, in my opinion," he said.
Here's how it works: Come in and just ask for a tree. No ID and no proof of need necessary. Just look for the big yellow warehouse where a dog named Shadow and a man in a Santa's hat will gladly bring a little Christmas your way – free of charge.
The trees are first-come, first-serve. The address is 1119 Central Avenue South in Kent. It's a big, yellow warehouse.
