Get Jesse: Furniture store takes customers' money then closes

11:15 PM PDT on Friday, May 2, 2008

By JESSE JONES / KING 5 News

AUBURN, Wash. - Customers who spent thousands of dollars on furniture made a nasty discover when they went to pick it up.

The company went out of business.

"Don't even think about buying from them. Don't purchase anything from them," said Cheryl Kang, who says she was shorted more than $1,500 dollars with of furniture by Ayala Décor.

Steve Boothe's business got hit even worse. He says he lost about $18,000. He went to Ayala Décor to check on his order only to find the store empty.

"It was due in a week from now and it doesn't look like I'm going to get it," said Boothe.

It's a story we've heard for weeks from several former customers and suppliers. The owners of Ayala Décor took their money and did not deliver.

The Kangs are still waiting for the coffee table and side tables they ordered last summer.

"The next thing you know, Thanksgiving went by, Christmas went by,  New Year's went by. Still no furniture," said Kang.

The Department of Licensing lists the owners of Ayala Décor as Jeff and Selene Hill of Lake Tapps. We tried for days to contact them to no avail, so we stopped by their house. There was a note on the door saying Jeff Hill was not home.

But Selene was. She did not answer the door, but she did call the landlord to get us off the property.

We complied, but then Selene called police. Two officers showed up, which is a little ironic when you consider that's exactly what Ayala Décor's customers want to see – police on Hills' doorstep.

But, most of them believe their money and furniture are gone forever.

We've learned Selene is filing for divorce from her husband. She blamed him for the business troubles. Alaya Décor has not filed for bankruptcy protection.
