Tiny homes growing in popularity

SEATTLE - A 325-square-foot house in Ballard may be the most expensive home in the neighborhood.

At $615 a square foot, the $200,000 house has a kitchen, a three-quarter bath, a living space and a closet.

Welcome to the future, a resurgence of the past, when homes were, by today's standards, tiny.

Small houses have always had their place in the market, but agents say lately, with the change in the real estate climate, tiny houses have become more appealing to potential buyers who don't want to pay the same price for a condo.

"With the price of land and people building cottage homes and that type of thing it's becoming more popular," said Kris Hendricks of Windermere Real Estate.

At Evan Paul's house, tall visitors have to duck to get into the front door

"Every time I've brought a friend by the house I say alright it's the smallest house on the block and they really never expect it but when they come by everyone laughs," he said.

He's now selling his 487-square-foot house for $260,000.

"It is nice having the yard and when they build all the townhouses and condos it gets pretty dense," said neighbor Mike Stapleman.

Paul says he's hoping that thought transcends into dollars, and he's happy to be a part of what may soon become a bigger trend.

Despite some interest, Paul's house has been on the market for 14 weeks.
