SEATTLE -- A driver going the wrong way on SR 520 was killed early Wednesday after she crashed head-on into a dump truck.

WSDOT crews have reopened all lanes westbound 520 after the fatal collision forced all lanes to close for several hours overnight.

Washington State Patrol said a woman was driving the correct direction on SR 520 around 3:30 a.m when she hit a construction barrier.  She did not have her lights on and she stopped her vehicle. That's when she was rear-ended by a vehicle.

The collision spun her car 180 degrees. State Patrol said for some reason the woman started to drive again without her lights on, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.  She collided head-on with a dump truck carrying a full load, and she was killed instantly.

Troopers believe alcohol was a factor.

No word if the driver of the truck was injured. State Patrol says the truck driver likely didn't see her coming.

"We're told by witnesses that at both times, there were no lights at all on the vehicle. Obviously in the dark, it would be very hard to see," said Trooper Julie Startup. "I'm not sure if this semi driver was very aware it was even happening."

The impact left a debris field longer than the length of a football field. Startup said the impact of the collision was so severe, they haven't been able to positively identify the driver killed.

All westbound 520 lanes were closed while police conducted their investigation. WSDOT crews reopened the westbound lanes shortly after 9 a.m.

KING 5's Jake Whittenberg and Liza Javier contributed to this report.

grnidmonstress, I agree that people should be more compassionate on this forum, but please don't try to come up with lame possibilities to explain away what the killed driver did or didn't do. Getting disoriented by a rear-end collision is one thing, driving off following an accident is another.

The amount of blame jumpers astounds me. There is no proof that this young woman had been drinking. For all you know she may have been experiencing an electrical issue following the striking of the concrete barrier. Let's also remember that the weather that evening was horrendous and that portion of 520 has very little shoulder space in part from the concrete barriers. One wrong move and it could happen to anyone. "Police said a Mitsubishi Gallant was stopped with its lights off behind cones at a construction zone at 92nd Avenue Northeast when it was clipped from behind by a Cedar Grove Compost truck traveling westbound. After the impact spun the Gallant around, the driver drove eastbound in the westbound lanes and was hit by a double dump truck." (See article posted on Kiro7). Whom among you has never been disoriented following a car accident? She may have not even known she was facing the wrong direction when she drove down the freeway into the dump truck. Get off your pedestals

The top three major causes of vehicular fatal accidents on highways and bi- ways; 1) Alcohol, this one is going to remain on top for some time to come as more unnecessary and needless deaths are to be taking place sometime in the start of June when Christine Gregoirers, new law on alcoholic beverages hits all the supermarkets, convenience stores and seven eleven stores. These beverages to be readily available 24 / 7 for quick sale and quick deaths of innocent and not so innocent humans. Maybe this is called Christines Gregoirers population control bill! 2) Cell Phones - texting and talking. This one could double and triple with the use of Alcohol! 3) Alzhiemers - this one often gets swept underneath the carpet and is often blamed do to alcoholisim. Wrong! If I were the people of the state of Washington, I would put hard liquor maybe even wines and champaignes back into the strict hands of the Government as before. Lives are important and irreplaceable! Preserve, protect, Defend Life.

Robsow, if you would only read the article before you comment you would learn that she turned around after she was struck in the rear. You can lead a horse to water...

Wrong Mild_ there may be no proof yet that booze was involved but it is mentioned as a suspected cause and Troopers have enough experience in these matters that they are probably correct. Besides if it acts like a drunk, it's probably a drunk. Only about 2 ways wrong way driving occurs either due to a confused elderly driver or someone that's chemically impaired, and most of the time it's the latter. Sad situation nonetheless, at least no one else was killed.

So sad that alcohol kills so many people each year. 520 closed west bound? Traffic is going to be a bear today. Time to work from home today for sure. Enjoy the commute

This is sad for all involved. Every time someone you loves goes out, remind them NOT to drink and drive. Keep reminding, reminding, reminding. Offer to be the DD.
