GIG HARBOR, Wash. - A woman who had pulled over to help after she saw an accident on Highway 16 Monday morning was killed when another car spun out of control, hitting her and a state trooper.

The trooper was not seriously injured.

The 44-year-old woman serving in the Navy was stationed on the USS Nimitz. Troopers believe she just wanted to help people who had been in the multi-car accident when she pulled over and was hit after stepping out of her car.

The State Patrol says the accident is a warning for other drivers.

“If someone gets out to help they can be a visual distraction to other drivers,” said Trooper Julie Startup. “It can be just enough of a distraction to cause someone to hit their brakes and they can lose control too.”

In another accident in Everett Police say a pedestrian hit walking on SR 526 may have been the driver of a disabled car  who was walking to find help.

troopers say the safest spot is in your car,  and if you need help wave a hand out your window

"Stay inside your car, stay buckled up make sure your lights on and if you don't have a way to get hold of us start waving, we'll get there shortly,” said Startup.

gizmo1 and amr87....join your fellow commuters on a weekday morning at 5 am and see for your self. Navy and its contractors fill hwy 16 then onto hwy 3 all morning. You can see them because of their uniforms. And not all of them are bad. There are the few but enough that allow me to generalize my commits. There are many navy personal that live in Tacoma/gig harbor. Remember the navy is a large group of people and you dont know everyone and where they live amr87. There might not be any navy people in your neighborhood. But trust me, there are plenty in the area and they are are all headed north to Bremerton, Bangor or keyport.

sxycj...I couldn't have said it better! MANY WA drivers are FROM CA. AMR87...I also totally agree with you. I can't believe that the posts are bashing drivers and the Navy when the whole point is a woman died trying to help. It doesn't matter if she was in the Navy or not. Yes, due to the weather conditions, she should have stayed in the car, but that would apply to ANYONE. The point is it's a tragedy and the story is about her death, not people who drive too fast.

Navy drivers have nothing to do with why she died so I still have no clue why anyone even brought this up. Most military people don't even live in Gig Harbor, and I know this because I was in the Navy and my husband is in the Navy and I live in Gig Harbor. I understand that there are crazy drivers out there but most of us are scared to death of speeding up here because we are more likely to be pulled over than a WA driver. I understand that becuase WA is a small community that anything we do is put under a microscope. The Navy does everything they can to prevent these forms of occurances.

theres no doubt she did a noble thing to stop to help a stranger. But you got to think in these conditions its better to call the police and EMT's and let them do the job. As the trooper said, we are just another distraction to passing drivers. And i've been making this trip every morning at the same time and I see the same speeding cars go flying by most of them have navy uniforms on. Im not trying to bash them, they serve so we can have the freedom we have. But when they are not out there serving they need to calm down a bit and obey the laws. Because they may feel like they are invisable after what they have been through doesnt give them the right to put the lives of the people around them in danger. Thank you to all that serve!

I am honestly speechless that a courageous women died today and this is all that she gets! I can’t believe that the only thing you guys have to talk about is how Navy people drive. I can’t wait until they finally are able to say her name out to the public! Then all of you will realize just how strong and brave she is! I would consider her to be one of the most STRONGEST, INTELLIGENT, COURAGOUSE and CARING woman in the Navy! She died doing one of things she was most known for “HELPING PEOPLE”. Who cares about all the other things! She wasn’t the one driving recklessly! There had to have been at least 7 accidents in that direction this morning alone. I’m going to make sure that her name and her memorial is broadcasted for everyone to see!!! She helped change the Navy for women and I will be dammed if these are the only comments posted about her death.

i find this quite amazing while at same time, 30 miles north, a guy was killed who was simply trying to get to work. A woman trying to help people in an accident is somehow thee most important story all morning long, while a guy who is only trying to get to work & is run down is barely mentioned at all. Both stories are tragedies, but what made one tragic death more important than the other when both happened at the same time? Oh... it's just another Boeing death in Everett, freeway closed, no need to go there, or report from there? Even the local paper took 5 hours to report it on their website. Maybe King-5 can do a report why employees with 30 yrs of service are so terrified to report to work, they will risk their life to jump across the freeway & die for their manager.

Hey CAnative before you start bashing us Washington drivers most of the people that live here are from Cali. I was born and raised here in Washington and proud of it. So tell me again why you are calling Washington drivers idiots? Hmmmmmmm maybe cause they are about 80% from Cali. and Cali does have the worst drivers ever. Point proven with you saying that you speed. Car Speed = Accident. I am also sure you are one of them that also talks on their cellphone when there is a law against it.

Just found out on the "other" TV station (KIRO) that the cause of the accident was a Motorcyclist who dropped their bike on icy roads. What the **** was that motorcyclist doing out on a morning like this! I parked my bike three weeks ago due to bad conditions!

Before you go bashing those "navy drivers" reader79, you should know that the woman who stopped to HELP those that had spun out was a navy woman. I can honestly say she is one of the best navy women I have ever had the privilege of serving with. She gave her wonderful life helping out a stranger. I drive fast by the way and I've seen PLENTY of idiot WA drivers.

I went through there early this morning at 0445 and it was supper icy. But that doesnt stop the navy personal heading to bremerton or bangor. They fly on hwy 16 every morning rain, snow or ice. I almost got hit by one of them this morning just past purdy when they were about to pass me they started to fishtail and spun around 3 or 4 times hitting the middle cable barrier and bouncing back into the hwy. A tanker truck had to do some major driving to avoid running over this guy. Some people just dont get it about slowing down for conditions.
