OLYMPIA, Wash. - A state Senate panel has approved a measure that would prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds by anyone under 18.

The Seattle Times (http://bit.ly/wXRiHQ ) says Washington currently has no age restrictions on indoor tanning beds. Some tanning salons require parental consent for children but they are not required to do so by law. Salons would be expected to check IDs.

California last year became the first state to ban tanning beds for all minors because of concerns over possible health hazards such as melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Opponents of the bill say the government shouldn't be deciding whether teenagers should use tanning beds.

Senate Bill 6249 awaits a vote from the full Senate.

I am 32, and just had to go in for a biopsy on my nose, i now have a huge ugly nasty scar that they are trying to lessen, but I'm still going to have a gross ugly scar on my nose. I've never gone to a tanning place, because I already knew how bad they were. I do now want to sit infront of one, and show the girls what their face can look like to.

Man scoty... we were doing so well, too... But I guess it was just a matter of time before someone would try to tie this to Obama. Did you not catch that this was a STATE issue and not a national one (yet)? It's gonna be a long year...

I don't agree with tanning beds period, and I ESPECIALLY do not agree with minors using them (like my 16 year old sister in law and her tanning bed addiction,) but like many other posters here said, isn't this the job of the parents?? Why does the government need to step in? Maybe instead of banning minors, they should send the parents back to parenting 101... just a thought.

So when's the "Save the teen tanorexics" telethon? WA has enough to do without also co-parenting vain teenagers. I agree with freedomfrank - what is it about the "magic" age of 18? News flash -- if teens can't have their tanning beds, then they'll just wait until summer and fry themselves in the sun slathered with no-SPF oil. Teens will do dumb things -- and they'll do them with or without the state usurping the parents' role! FIX THE BUDGET!!! All other non-budget bills can wait. Do I hear anyone screaming PRIORITIES?????

What about the budget? What about the deficit? If Oylmpia goes into another 30-day special section because they haven't taken care of the budget or deficit instead of stupid s**t like gay marriage, and this I'm going to be really p***ed off!

If tanning beds are sooooooooo dangerous why are they allowed in the first place,, same with cigarettes, and booze, and double quarter pounders with cheese and a large french fry? Energy drinks are probably the most dangerous things teens have access to but wheres the outrage over that? Do we need the government banning or regulating everything that has the ability to cause harm? Also,,, someone please tell me at that magical age of 18 that makes it OK? Why not 21 like beer? OK to smoke at 18 but not drink beer? What kinda bass ackwards thinking is going on? The military is a very dangerous place but if you are 18 its all fine and dandy but they still can't drink a beer lol,,,, goofy government.

I guess I look at it the same way I do with minors smoking (or at least buying tobacco products). I guess they can still "spray tan" though, so all is not lost for the tanning salons. Myopinion, please let me know when you figure out how to make that "parents actually parent" thing happen. What a better world that would be.

Here is an idea. Mom and dad could parent thier kids and help them make good choices. Then maybe, just maybe, the state wouldn't have to parent the children
