SEATTLE -- Seattle Police are investigating a swastika on the door of a University of Washington student as a hate crime.

The swastika was found drawn on the door of a 19-year-old third floor Haggett Hall student, who identified himself as Jewish.

The word "Jew" was also written above the 2-inch by 2-inch swastika.

The student found it on Sunday, January 8 at 8:30 p.m., when police were notified. He told officers he didn't know anyone who may have targeted him, but said it could have been the act of someone who was drunk.

Officers said the incident is considered a hate crime, but there are no suspects at this time.

nativewa: don't be disappointed in Washingtonians because of some stupid racist attending UW. There are a huge amount of out of state and out of country students attending UW.

This is so lame. Really? People who paint swastika's on peoples doors or houses are such losers. They also need to get a clue. Jews are white so why the self hate. I'm disappointed in Washington. Growing up, I thought us Washingtonians were much different. As of late it seems like either we have a hidden undercurrent of homegrown racist or racist are moving in.

Being drunk doesn't make someone hate and paint a swastika- the hate was already there. I am so GLAD that this student reported this to the police, as we all know colleges are adept at sweeping crimes committed on campus, under the rug.

This is absolutely discusting..don't go giving the excuse someone who did it was drunk..Drunk or sober, the person (s) who did this terrible deed need to pay one way or the other for this dispicable act..I'm not Jewish but I am speaking for myself and all Jewish people and how this act is inexcuseable and this poor, Jewish student has my support and I am glad he reported this incident.. This should not be happening this day and age, never should have happened in WW2 when Jews were sent to the extermination camps..I just cannot come up with the words of discust that I am feeling..My family is University of Washington Alumni and I hope the University doesn't excuse this behavior as a drunk student..
