TACOMA -- Preaching from an electronic pulpit, he delivers his own brand of fire and brimstone.

"I mean if religion is so great why did it start so many wars? Why does it build huge churches but fails to feed the poor?" asks Jeff Bethke in a spoken-word rant on YouTube.

Bethke is a poet turned Internet prophet. There have been nearly 19 million views of his video called "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus."

"It looks like I almost woke up a sleeping giant," he says.

That giant, Bethke believes, is a generation curious about Christ but sick of the religious hypocrisy they see in church and political leaders. One excerpt from the video asks, "What if I told you Republican doesn't automatically mean Christian, and just because you call someone blind doesn't automatically give you vision?"

Bethke asks those leaders, "Are we putting something as a barrier or a qualification before you can come to Jesus? I don't care what it is, Democratic or Republican, if we're doing that it's wrong and I'm gonna rail against it."

Bethke is a native of Tacoma and graduate of Pacific University in Oregon. He and a friend shot the video outside Tacoma's Stadium High School in January almost exactly one month ago. Since then it has become an Internet phenomenon garnering Bethke attention from national TV news outlets The New York Times and many more.

The video's popularity has earned him offers for book deals and clothing endorsements. It has also opened him up to persecution from everyone from atheists to fellow Chrsitians. Some poke holes in his arguments, others question his affiliation with Seattle's Mars Hill Church -- whose lead pastor once decried yoga as "demonic."

"The hardest ones for me are those people who are supposedly my brothers and sisters in the faith," he says.

Ultimately, Bethke does draw a line in the sand, believing Jesus is the only way to God -- something that to many sounds a whole lot like...religion. Contradictions aside, he hopes his "spoken word" will inspire even those who disagree to start a conversation.

"We're all trying to find, in some way, satisfaction and fulfillment. So, I'm just trying to point to where I found that."

the 1 time i went to cult/church i got kicked out for wearing a ac/dc shirt. its not like i planed it i was just at a friends house and had to go. really does god care where u are on sunday, and not who you are everyday. if so I guess ill be with all my friends in hell. at least ill be in good company, becides who wants to be a part of that group anyway. people who are always worried about whats to come after life, and not the life that has been given to them. alot of the religous people i know are products of rehab, or just lost soles looking for blind answers of how to live their lives and who to hate and why to hate them. church is probably a good place for them, but i really dont need them preaching to me about how i live. becides doesnt god have to forgive me, after all he created me.

Fascinating; while I'm agnostic I do find this gentleman's video is rather poignant. I have to agree with his view that if there is a God that all the "religions", or "churches" or what have you are made by man...ultimately to exert influence and control over others. Doesn't matter what religion or sect or church it is, there is heavy influence by the "leaders" of the churches to control others. I think what this gentleman was really pointing out is that religion, sects and churches need to be TOTALLY transparent as the members of those churches. Something akin to Mark 4:22; hey, I'm agnostic but I can still read (as I have done with many religions). The interpretation by this young man would seem to be in sync with this biblical directives that you can't have have your hidden agendas, rituals or cloth yourself in self-righteousness. I know many religious and non-religious people that do good works...and I've met many who are downright nasty to everyone around them.

Jeff and his brother Brandon aren't into Jesus as much as they are self-promotion. "Get me on video" is the creed they live by.

He looks Jewish. So was Jesus. His followers didn't become organized religion until after his death. Christians have killed each other for centuries with church blessings.

I"d take it one step further: hate the religion but love Jesus almost gets it right, except that it still will lead to religion, just in a new form. My response: hate religion, love the universe

This guy hits it on the dot. Organized religion is useless and not necessary for and individual to have a personal relationship with God and Jesus. Most of the time, leaders of organized religion tend towards corruption and are only in it for the money and power.

@musicfreak - LDS is a lie. They have perverted the scriptures and modified Christianity into something that it's not. Get out while you can. LDS is a cult.

Point of clarification here, musicfreak did not state that LDS was the one true church "for him" in his origianl post. He stated it was the one true church, period. Big difference. And for the record, there are many Catholics, Luterans, Baptists, Buddists (and on and on) who help the poor. Just as there are members of LDS who do nothing but live for themselves. Hyprocrisy lives in some people of EVERY religion musicfreak, even if "you" don't see it. LDS is no different than any other religion in that regard. I'm happy you found "your" place, but that's NOT what your words said in your first post.

I find it truly amazing how "christians" love Jesus, a person who was so vilified by his own religion that he was put to death because of his anti-religious ways. Jesus was a Jew. The Jews didn't like him being a rabble rouser and used the method-of-the day for ex-communication. The "christian" religion is false, live with it...

I don't think there was anything wrong with musicfreaks post other than him trying to talk negatively about the LDS church. We as Christians are not here to judge. That is not our place! But there is nothing wrong with him saying he's found the one real church for him. What's so bad about that? For me, I believe in god and have love for him, but I'm not one for organized religion either. I don't believe you have to go to church to have a relationship with God.

I give everyone the ability to believe what they wish to believe. I've been to a lot of different churches in my 38 years. I know I'm at the church I'm meant to be at. It's the one true church to me (and everyone I know who belongs to the same faith feels the same way). I do not, in any way, push my beliefs on anyone else. It's good for ME, and that's what's important to ME.

musicfreak, you lost all credibility as soon as you typed the words "one true church". Once again a person putting his "church" and beliefs above all other's in the world. You're type of thinking is EXACTLY the problem with religion in general. At least in my opinion.

I've got two different feelings on this video that I saw a few weeks ago. I used to feel as badly about religion as this young man does, until I found the one true church...and we *do* help the poor, and I haven't seen the hypocrisy I've seen in other churches, and it's the most wonderful place in the world. Not all religions follow in the footsteps of Christ...the LDS church, however, does.
