SEATTLE – Winds hammered the Puget Sound region on Saturday morning, with gusts to 50 mph in some places, including Seattle. The winds caused problems for crews working to restore power to customers left in the dark after the snow and ice storm.

“Unfortunately that howling wind that maybe lost us some sleep lost us some ground,” said Andy Wappler of Puget Sound Energy.

Wappler said PSE was down to 180,000 customers out of service before the wind began, which meant that power was restored to some 40,000 customers between 10 p.m. last night until about 4 a.m. Saturday morning. Click for utility company links, info

“But unfortunately those numbers are marching up again,” he said.

PSE has 900 utility line people in the field - that’s 200 crews, Wappler said.

“We’re giving it the full press but we’re not getting any break from the weather,” he said.

Wappler said over the course of the week, crews have restored power to about 400,000 customers.

"We know that really the number that counts is one, which is that one customer at home that's going to say 'what about me?' he said. "Believe me we have not forgotten about you, we will keep working.

The snowmelt, combined with heavy rain, brings the threat of flooding. An urban and small stream flood advisory is in effect for most of Western Washington.

A flood warning was in effect for the Skokomish River in Mason County.

Between 2 and 5 inches of precipitation fell on the south slopes of the Olympic Peninsula in a 24-hour period. The freezing level has been in the 5000 to 7000 foot range so most of that fell as rain.

After a fairly calm afternoon with a few showers and sun breaks, another storm will head our way.

“That’s going to bring with it more rain and more wind,” said KING 5 forecaster Keisha Burns. “The wind this time focused around the north interior, with gusts to 60 mph.

On Sunday and Monday, more rain is likely, though showers will decrease later Monday with some sun breaks. Highs will remain mostly in the low to mid 40s. Overall, next week looks wet with temperatures near or just slightly below average.

Thank you to all the hard-working power crews out there working around the clock to restore everyone's power! I hope that if any of you read these silly comments that you don't take personally the bone-headed whiny ones. The vast majority of us know how hard you are working and how dangerous your work is! So stay safe, and thanks again!

@dedria, who commented that PSE does not work on the weekend..........that is so not true! PSE is working around the clock and in conjunction with many other power companies from out of state who have come to help. PSE did not cause the weather conditions, but they are working in dangerous conditions to restore power.

Does anyone happen to know when outlying areas around Enumclaw might have power?

We live in an electronic society and have become used to "comforts." I can certainly understand the bitterness towards the government for wanting to run to the rescue of foreign countries. I too am freezing my *** off under numerous blankets when I'm not taking careof livestock and a paraplegic daughter who was recently discharged from the hospital after more than a month.

@concernLH - For years there has been a push to get people to stock up on emergency supplies. I gather from your comments that you haven't bothered to do this so now may feel the sharp edge of discomfort as a result and now want others to help you and loved ones. Try this instead: buy a wind up radio, or get some warm polar fleece blankets to wrap up in and stay warmer, and have canned soups, etc stored away so you can warm them - outside on a porch, or under an open carport, or even under a large tarp you put up in your yard - and get that tarp and that coleman stove and the extra gas canisters. Have extra batteries. Be prepared with extra bottled water. Have several days supplies available for just such emergencies. You're a big boy and can easily do this. Do something instead of absolutely nothing, followed by complaining. Maybe this storm will prompt you and others into action so you can better take care of yourself and family members in the next storm - THIS winter.

BTW - there are and have been power crews out all over the place hard at it since this all started. Just because you don't see a power company truck at the end of your road doesn't mean they don't care about you or are not working on getting your power fixed. And no, I have no affiliation to any power company. Just tired of all the whiners in the world.

Tired of seeing so many people screaming about getting help from the government every time something slightly out of the ordinary happens. How exactly should the government respond in the situation you refered to concernLH? Somehow they should know every single persons situation and be able to go out and knock on your mothers door to help her or reassure her? It was 3 days - Really, people can't make it for 3 days without power? Sorry it was cold but it was not that cold, warm clothes would have got you through if you had no source of heat. And before you jump in my 5#!t about being there - I live right down the road from your mom and was without power as well. We helped neighbors out and made sure everyone was ok and had what they needed and did what we could where we could. It's sad how people can't make it on thier own for a few days at a time (by on thier own I mean without gov't/power/stores/civilization/etc...).

There may be electrical power crews from out of state that are assisting local power companies restore power in the Puget Sound area. I believe it would be interesting if KING 5 did a store on them.

You seem to be missing my point (which has been said repeatedly) My point is that it's not the job of the government take care of people. It's up to people to take care of people. Please don't think that I have not helped my friends and family who are without, because we have. Your mom's neighbor did exactly what we've been doing. Which is what we all are supposed to do. People may not have the means to buy a ton in food supplies, but what if you bought a few extra cans of food, or a bottle of water every week. It will add up. As you've seen, mommy government isn't gonna help you!

=)...okay we have difference of opinion, and I can see a point in your rudeness/attitude(If those people aren't prepared for the power-lines to be knocked down, they deserve to die in the cold winter night). But facts are still facts and people are still people. Not everyone is prepared for a disaster like this, and some people don't have the means for that. It doesn't mean people like you should look down on them and grumble some "opinion"...I wasn't asking someone to give me their opinion on the help offered or not offered in bad situations. Thanks.

concernLH: We have been without power for 3 days now. We are doing fine because we are prepared for times like this. Here is the answer to your question: No help. Take care of yourself and your family. Don't rely on governments. (Yes, we should not be giving my tax money in the form of foreign aid. Allow me to chose who to give my money to.) Call me crazy for stockpiling a few months supplies, but I am not the one b!tch1ng about not getting help.

@c8lsonics-So a simple response...This is not the pioneer times. I can guess that you're either not in the mess, already out of the mess, or just a crazy-the end of the world might come so lets stock up on a lifetime supply...=) And if the government can go into other countries to help them out in disasters that they weren't "prepared" for...then they can help people here in our own country. Also, I'd still like a response about what help is being sent to these smaller towns that aren't really top priority yet.

@concernLH: Why would that be governments problem if people are not prepared. We have 360 days of the year when things are ok, why are you (your mother and others like her) not preparing for the "worst" during those times. Circumstances do come up, we need to help each other, but it is not the governments responsibility to take care of you. How did the early pioneers ever survive without power and cell phones!!

I only see a few mentioned places, and I've talked to my mother who lives in Bucoda and she says that the power is out there as well. Since Wednesday night. I've asked if there's been any kind of assistance offered from the city/start and she says no. Although a neighbor has been kind with warm food. I'd like to know why help isn't being offered to everyone. Everyone feels the cold. I haven't talked to her since yesterday because she also lost her cell phone connection in the afternoon. Not only are they out of power, they also have no way to contact anyone for help if an emergency came up.

No power, No PS Energy to be found, Government offices closed for the weekend. Where is the emergency? Who are these people without power, they are of little consequence, not important. So what, people without power have children and some are elderly, it's the weekend, they/PSE and Government does not work on the weekend even in "state of emergency."
