Changes coming to Seattle kindergarten programs

Saving for college is hard enough for many families, but now some in Seattle may have to consider saving for kindergarten. The city's school district plans to raise tuition for full day kindergarten and eventually phase out the subsidy altogether.

The Seattle School District plans to raise fees for full-day kindergarten by 15% next fall to about $2,700 for 10 months. It's yet another hand in the family budget, says parent Juli Russell.

"A lot of us pay a lot of money for pre-school, and you look forward to public education where you don't have to pay and you can start saving money for college."

Schools that currently qualify for free full-time kindergarten because of a low income population of at least 55% would not be affected. The rest, about half of the Seattle's elementary schools, would. It leaves troubling questions for many who worry about those struggling to pay the current rate.

"What if they can't pay? What are they gonna do?" Asks parent Ruth Michaelis.

And the writing is on the wall for future Seattle kindergarteners. The tuition for 2013 is expected to jump to over $3,100. After that, the subsidy will most likely disappear completely, according to school officials. It's a response to dwlindling government aid.

In Kent, however, where schools took a $17 million budget cut, the school district still pays the full $1.7 million a year to provide free coverage to all kindergarteners. Administrators say they've simply made it a top funding priority because for every dollar spent today they save $10 down the road.

"We see it in reduced social service costs, reduced costs in terms of criminal behavior, reduced mental health services," says Supt. Edward Lee Vargas.

In Seattle, parents who can't afford to pay would be able to opt for free part-time kindergarten. Many, though, believe that short-changes students since voluminous studies show the more time spent in school early on the better. The Seattle School Board will vote on the issue in March.  A public meeting is scheduled for February 29th.

My kindergartener attends free full-time kindergarten, but it's really too much for her. She misses her play time and often seems over tired and worn out. I would much prefer part time kindergarten. She needs the free-time to use her imagination. Unfortunately many kids would spend their home time glued to the TV. I think the fact that we need all day kindergarten shows the deteriation of family stucture in our state. Why not work on helping parents make better choices? If more people could stay married, more parents could stay home with their children & we wouldn't have to have government providing all the healthy stimulation for our children.

Ooooh.... permits to have children? For some, yes. I have 2 kids, one had 1/2 day K and the other was in a free full day because only 3 children were signed up for 1/2 day... Agreed, all day K is a gift, not a privilege... People should BUDGET for children, not expect others to take care of them.

Our education programs at its best. Maybe next year we can pay for first grade also and just work our way up.

I guess that means being a responsible parent means we need a federally mandated income threshold before we can have children? Or maybe we should just sterilize poor women so they don't breed and take resources away from optional infrastructure projects. Thinking twice, and "learning" are products of the school system--which if we mess with will produce more "un" learned people. Good job to Kent for investing in their children.

@underserf....cool your jets. All Juliajae said is that she is a responible parent. Just what are you taking offense too. Maybe if more people figured out out that it cost money to raise a child, they would think twice about starting a family until thay are finacially capable of providing.

Wow - too broke for kindergarten but we have 2 stadiums underwritten by the taxpayer ( NO multi-thousand-seat venue pays for the traffic they create) standing empty most of the time =AND= we can find the money to build another. BTW julajae - thank you for rubbing everyone's face in YOUR good fortune. D'ya stop by hospitals and rag on ppl in wheelchairs too? After all, if ONE paraplegic can get up Mt Rainer, we ALL should be able to, right?

PAY for Kindergarten?? I don't think so. This is a ridiculous concept. While I understand that half-day is definitely better for a young child, the thought of having to pay for a full day absolutely blows my mind.

I am a parent with a child going into Kindergarten in the Fall. I would prefer half day Kindergarten because I think that kids that age need to be out running around and exploring and doing hands on learning and not in a classroom for that long. But, if you do half day all you get is Math and Reading. It's not at all like Kindergarten of the past. Not to mention at our neighborhood school, which is huge, only two families opted for half day this school year. I got lots of puzzled looks when I asked for that option. They really try and make you think you will be letting your child down if you do that, when there is no benefit to it beyond the 3rd grade. At this point I am leaning toward homeschooling for Kindergarten. There are a lot of great classes my kid can take with that money and I can teach her the basics.

What!?!? Charging money for public school? Seattle School District, don't become a daycare. If it's been determined that kindergarteners don't need a full day of school, send them home. As a parent of 2 that chose to both have children AND work, it was MY responsibility to arrange care for my children if I couldn't be with them. What happened to parent responsibility? Put these children in licensed daycare if you need/choose to work outside the home but charging for public school is criminal.

i hadn't heard of full time kindergarten until i heard this story on king5. so forgive my ignorance but considering this is kindergarten, is this education or a glorified daycare/after school care?

Our state is broke. Half day kindergarten is free.... I feel families have a choice..... pay for the second half day personally or home school and trade with neighbors the second half day or spend time with their own kids each day for reading and education. As parents we are our children's first teacher...

Umm... When did kindergarten turn into full-day? If this preserves programs in higher-education... Win!
