SEATTLE - The Seattle City Council has voted to place a $60 vehicle licensing fee on the November ballot.
The tab fee, which would pay for road and transit improvements, would run for 10 years.
"Fix what’s broken and finish what we started. That’s my goal in this,” said Councilwoman Sally Bagshaw.
Opponents call it a tax that hurts the poor the most.
"A colossally regressive tax that takes it out of the hides of low income and working people,” said John Fox.
According to the Seattle Transportation Benefit District website, the proposal would devote about 30 percent of the revenue to pavement preservation and safety, about 50 percent to transit improvements and local transit access funds, and the remaining 20 percent to pedestrian and bicycle safety investments
The Seattle licensing fee would be on top of a $20 fee already approved by the king County Council.
