Seahawks change gameplan over 'Beergate' cup size scandal

SEATTLE -- Thirsty Seahawks fans, rest easy tonight. You'll get every ounce of beer you paid for at Saturday's playoff game at Qwest Field.

You Tube video was posted Thursday showing a fan, presumably at a recent Seahawks game at Qwest Field, pouring the contents of a "large" 20 ounce beer into a "small" beer's 16 ounce cup.

All of the liquid poured from the 20 ounce cup fit completely into the 16 ounce cup, to the surprise and outrage of the Seahawks fan.

The 20 ounce beer costs $1.25 more than the 16 ounce beer. In a nutshell, fans who bought the 16 ounce beer have been getting the same amount of their favorite domestic for less money than the fans who paid more for the 20 ounce.

The video went viral around Seattle, with comments, Facebook posts, tweets and emails. Some even dubbed it "Beergate," giving the ordeal instant scandal status.

By Thursday evening, officials at Qwest Field got hold of the video and responded:

"We discovered the cups that are marked 16 oz. hold 20 oz. of liquid. Fans who purchased a 16 oz. beer actually received 20 oz. of beer for the 16 oz. price," they wrote.

As a result, only 20 ounce beers will be served at Saturday's playoff game against the Saints, and Qwest will charge the 16 ounce price.

@justhonest, that would be fine if they didn't hold you hostage. You can't bring in your own or they will throw you out without a refund if you get caught. They might even call the police to "escort" you out. They hold all the cards, and they know it. That's why the prices are high. They just barely (last season?) changed the policy on allowing sealed water bottles in. There is much money to be made at the tailgate party parking lot on selling sealed caps for water bottles. Fill it with Bacardi or vodka, and have a little fun. Oh, and by the way, everyone needs to watch the video again. I did the math on it, and came up with .068 oz more fits into the "20oz" cup than into the "16oz." cup. Look at the top of the 20. There's 1/4 inch of head space after the 16 is poured into it. The 16 was full to the brim. It depends on who is pouring as to whether they will be equal or different.

Amazing to me all the people that are getting "RIPPED OFF" you know how much the tickets are and how much the food is when you go. If "we" keep paying the prices why should they lower anything. As far as the 16oz /20oz somone either got cheated or someone got a good deal. If the cups were labeled incorrectly from the company who made them then I guess they should pay the vendors the difference for the loss. Big question is.... Is life fair?

Can I just say that anyone that ordered those cups had to know what size they were. If this truly was the mistake of the manufacturer, don't you think we'd be hearing from them? Anyway, when you work in the food service industry, you order your cups by the case, or by the amount/# of ____ oz cups. They had to know what ounce cups they were ordering, and the simple fact of how they are trying to spin this makes me want to gag. A loss today would be hilarious karma for them....

I thought it was common practice to sneak in your own refreshments..paying obscene prices for 'meh' beer is simply nuts..

And BJ Shea wonders why we can't sell out a playoff game until 24 hours prior to kickoff. But then again he complained that fans were not buying tickets so he could sit home and watch the game on tv.

$8 for a single beer, $25 for parking, tickets for $60 t0 $200 each. C'mon, I could almost fly to Hawaii for that, and all you're complaining about is 4 oz of missing beer. How about "I want my taxes back".

That's what Qwest is best at doing, ripping off people! LMAO! I never, never, never buy anything at any types of professional games. The prices are beyond inflated! Surely there is an attorney who has been ripped off and will start a class action suit! That's an oxymoron: attorney being ripped off! GO SEAHAWKS!

Regardless whether the 20oz cups were mislabeled or not, $8.00 for beer (16 or 20 oz) is just raping fans. That's why everyone should just sneak in whatever they want to drink into the games. Heck, I won't even pay for soda there either. Bad foods and drinks are not the only overpriced things sold at Qwest and Safeco; there are Seahawks and Mariners too. The quality of the games are just as big of a ripoff.

That's the way to spin it - we didn't scam you, you got more than you paid for! True, but only half so. They conveniently ignored the half where people actually got less than they paid for. And apparently, the spin worked very well on old @maxxcor there.

maxxcor, I believe you might be misunderstanding jas_55's post. The people who ordered the "small" beers clearly benefited from the mistake. However, I believe jas_55 is stating that it was a rip-off for the people who paid $1.25 EXTRA for the "large" beer when they could have saved that money had they known the "small" beer contained the same amount for a lesser cost. A person ordering a "large" beer should expect more in their cup than a "small" beer. Regardless, I doubt the vendors were hardly shorted by this mistake. $8.00 for beer is ridiculous.

Hey jas_55 - Did you actually read the article? Did the part about "We discovered the cups that are marked 16 oz. hold 20 oz. of liquid. Fans who purchased a 16 oz. beer actually received 20 oz. of beer for the 16 oz. price," they wrote." escape your notice? If that's true it was the vendors who were shorted, not the consumers. As hard as it may seem to believe, mistakes are made. It might have been smart for the video maker to verify just how big the cups were, but then again, we all make mistakes. So many people are willing to jump to conclusions assuming that everybody is out to rip them off. Just 'cuz it's on YouTube doesn't make it true.

This is outrageous. These vendors and the managment who benefit from this scam should be held accountable for this ripoff of all the consumers for however long they have been pulling this scam. Probably the same vendors and cups used at Mariner's games..... What a shame. You can't trust anybody anymore.
