SEATTLE -- Police used pepper spray to break up fights among shoe buyers who pushed and shoved outside the Westfield Southcenter mall to pick up some of the first Nike retro Air Jordans that went on sale early Friday morning.

Police said more than 1,000 people lined up outside the mall, located just south of Seattle. Shoppers said the shoes were supposed to go on sale at 4 a.m. and people could start lining up at 2 a.m., but some people arrived earlier than they were supposed to. Police were called in to control disputes that broke out over line-cutting or pushing.

Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.

"They just moved everyone to one single line, so they are pretty upset," said Charles Wilby, shopper. "Everyone is fighting over the shoes, arguing and stuff."

Arguments escalated and shoppers reported screaming, yelling and pushing. Police said at one point, the force of the crowd bent a door off its hinges and some people managed to run inside the mall.

A fight broke out among some of the shoppers and police used pepper spray to break up the fight.

"Everybody was trying to stop the fight, and they just started spraying," said one shopper.

"It was just crazy, with people and commotion, all the police showing up and pepper spraying," said Tawnni Merlino, who was in the crowd.

Tukwila Police Officer Mike Murphy said about 20 people were sprayed in a group. One man was arrested for assault after police say he pushed an officer. No one was injured.

"It was verging on a riot. We were on the verge of losing control of the crowd," said Murphy. "Once police got here, we had to use some pepper spray on some people who were fighting. But without police intervention, it would have easily turned into a riot."

Police report within the crowd, there was evidence of alcohol and marijuana.

Carlisa Williams said she came out for the experience of it and spent $328 on two pairs of shoes. But she said after this experience, she will never do anything like this again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," said Williams. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

One buyer walking away with the shoes said it's a classic style that sells for $180 a pair retail, but on the Internet can fetch up to $400.

By 6 a.m. the stores sold out of the shoes and all but about 50 people got their Air Jordans, said Murphy.

The mall initially contacted police saying they needed two officers to monitor the crowd. In the end, about 25 officers from Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Seattle and King County responded. Murphy said they smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

Hundreds of customers also lined up for hours outside stores in downtown Seattle Nike store and a mall in Federal Way. No disputes were reported at either location.

Elsewhere, shoppers lined up in droves outside stores in several cities around the country for the Nike retro Air Jordans.

In Georgia, at least four people were arrested in a mad dash by customers hoping to purchase the the new Nike Air Jordans at a suburban Atlanta shopping mall.

DeKalb County police said up to 20 squad cars responded to a mall in Lithonia. They said a large crowd broke down a door to get inside before a store opened. Police say they escorted most of the people back outside, but took four into custody.

In Taylor, Mich., police said about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. A 21-year-old man was arrested.

Nike released this statement:

"We are extremely concerned to hear of the reported crowd incidents around the launch of the Air Jordan XI at some select retail locations. Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

Tickle me Elmo, Barbie dolls...mostly whites and alot of fights as well. Doesn't matter the race "realitychk" is right, it's a society issue, not a race issue. I've been around for 50 years and I've seen it from ALL groups, just depends on the product and circumstance.

Wow, turn this into a race card. Just amazing but I wouldn't expect any less from Seattle. It's my opinion if you go to these things and bad things happen that's your fault for being there in the first place. There is nothing in any store that is that important that I would ever stand in a line for something I can live without. Pure insanity in my opinion and a selfish act upon yourself for wanting to be there. It's only a tennis show for gods sake. Most will wear them and they will wear out like the $19,95 version bought at payless. The funny thing about gluttony is you always want more and you are never satisfied. As soon as you buy something 5 minutes later you are either wanting more or back to being depressed again. I'm glad all of you are out there risking your lives over junk.

It's just a sad commentary when people are so disenfranchised from meaningful life and values that their self-worth is denigrated to possession of things. The unemployment rate, the boredom from being urban in the first place, a society that has embraced consumerism and found humor in people fighting over clothes, toys and now shoes and we find this new "fad" to be different, why? I'm disturbed by the herd mentality and the quick move to fighting and violence taken by the mob but the problem is our society as a whole. As long as there are excuse makers for this behavior and society finds excessive consumerism acceptable, while people place value in over-priced imported goods( tennis shoes, the season's "hot" toy or name brand clothing), this behavior will worsen. This is not attributable to one "type" of people. A label doesn't fix it. Growing numbers of Americans are focused on short-term inconsequential things and lack self control and pride thus stampede like cattle for "things".

think - this type of activity rarely happens with minorities, 90 percent of the folks that black Friday shop, wait days for the new apple product, or a new PlayStation, or a new xbox etc...(each of these releases needed RIOT CONTROL) are white folks. Should I hate them for that? there is no reason for hate in this situation by someone that has nothing to do with the situation, take a nap.

It's funny how the teabaggers grab onto any story, regardless of what it is, and immediately inject their racism. Whats funny is that teabaggers only account for less than 13% of Americans, so what does that tell you? It appears that teabaggers are the ones on welfare because no working person has this much time to monitor every blog and post incessantly. Either they have no job, or no friends. Probably both. You guys need to get a life.

The media et al may create the hype, but it's still a personal choice to act like a neanderthal fighting for the last mastodon scrap (and I apologize in advance for any historical inaccuracies). No one had a branding iron to their butts to make them act like that -- it's ridiculous. And it's not one specific race -- I've seen others act ridiculous at the Coach outlet too. It's just stuff people, stuff. Those shoes will be worth $2 at a garage sale in less than 5 years.

Why is it repeatedly being stated that these people are on welfare and EBT? because the majority of the people in line are black? I guess it's because you don't have to wait in line for Coach purses, Ipads, lap tops and Iphones, or you'd see the philipinos rushing the mall too. This is one more way of the media making Blacks look bad, and lets not forget that the the report that just came out regarding the Seattle/Tukwila police...... they pepper spray everything, not known for their good judgement. Let people buy what they want, black friday TVs or shoes. Remember the media, sports spokesman, and advertisers create all of this for their profit.

Shoes! Come on people. What a waste of money. I must say that marketing companies are pretty darn good to create such a hype over a pair of shoes. I agree with so many comments in here. For those that bought those shoes, you could have helped a family have a wonderful Christmas Dinner. Helpful types of spending will last a lifetime. Shoes break down and become obsolete at some point. I know someone that has a bed full of shoes that have never been worn and thinks that he has a treasure chest of value and he has a broken down car and sleeps on his mothers couch. SMH - Most of them are not even worth anything anymore. It's obvious, some people's priorities are pretty screwed up and they are the first ones to be broke, but they have a nice pair of shoes.

Greed, illiteracy and poverty. The poor have decided that name brands like Nike, Coach, etc. will make them look intelligent, classy and sophisticated. Too bad our society didn't have more of the intelligence of that teenage girl. the lower the intelligence level and higher the insecurity, the higher the importance of material things.... It has nothing to do with Nike, or race. Old white housewives act the same way over what they think is important ( the latest hot toy). Everyone is insecure that ties how they feel about themselves to material objects, marketing in the USA makes people value material things more than relationships or great experiences. And I'm curious where all these guys work who are shelling out $180 on shoes. Are their kids getting presents, or is it all about them having shiny new shoes? Ridiculous. Off to go pick up some handmade chocolates at the local chocolate shop.

The ID-10-T virus spreads like wildfire! I wonder, do the local law enforcement agencies send the bill for their services directly to Nike or Michael Jordan?

Sheeple is right. Unreal. This brings flashbacks of those stupid cabbage patch dolls that everyone had to have. I generally don't follow the crowds of sheeple and don't usually buy things that require standing in line to get. In fact I never have, and I never will, because of people like this. What a bunch of morons. Yet another reason why I do most of my shopping online. So I don't have to bother with the idiots.

$180 bucks per pair. I have a full time well paid job and wouldn't have budget problems paying that much for a stinking pair of shoes. How can youngsters afford these? Apparently allowances have skyrocketed since I was a kid.

Well, Seattle wasn't alone in the Nike idiocy. Atlanta, cities in NJ, KY and elsewhere had their sneaker head riots too. Have those sneaker heads thought that those "shoes" represent money that could be better spent elsewhere? Save the price of a pair of those stupid shoes for a few months and take a class. Enrich your minds, not waste it on over hyped shoes. I recall from years ago kids were getting mugged for their designer "sports hero" shoes and coats. Will the same fate await the kids who are buying these Air Jordans? Live your lives from the inside out, not the other way around. You are what you are on the inside, not what you wear!

Nike represents everything that is wrong with America, they can make shoes for 2 bucks in china and else where and charge 180 dollars for them and people line up to buy them. You would think they could make them here for a little bit more and hire a lot of Americans but oh no. Please do not buy anything from Nike.

I guess I'm pretty thankful we aren't fighting over food like this as in some other countries. Enjoy your shoes,,,,
