STEVENS PASS, Wash. – Three people were killed in an avalanche at Stevens Pass on Sunday afternoon.

The avalanche occurred at Tunnel Creek Canyon Road in an out of bounds area described as being "ski at your own risk."

Brent Felt said he saw groups of skiers climbing over a place called "Seventh Heaven," heading into the back country.

"I was thinking to myself you know that's a lot of people going out of bounds at this moment but 14 inches of new snow and people want to get some more fresh powder, you know they're going to go seek it out," he said.

When the snow cut loose, it swept up the three groups of skiers in an avalanche.

"At one point after the avalanche they're all buried in the snow," said Sgt. Kathleen Larson, King County Sheriff's Office. "They manage to dig themselves out of the snow. At that point they realize that three of them are in distress. They begin CPR."

Unfortunately CPR didn't work. Three men, ages 30, 35 and 45, were pronounced dead. A fourth person survived.

"There is signage up, letting everybody know that these are out of bounds areas and they opted to ski those particular areas," said Larson.

Felt said he noticed that when he saw those skiers headed out they had the right equipment with them.

"They had their beacons, sensors that were going off every time they were going through the sensory zone," he said.

The fourth skier in the group survived because she was wearing a device used to provide air if swept up in an avalanche.

Also Sunday, a snowboarder was killed in a separate incident at the Alpental ski area at Snoqualmie Pass.

I keep forgetting to mention the innocent snow boarder that lost his/her life at Alpental..I am so sorry for all those who loved this person..Just became so angry and upset at these "experts" chose to ski in an "out of bounds" area when it was avalanche season..

Such a tragedy for the communities of Stevens Pass and the family and friends of these incredible outdoorsmen. Nothing illegal takes place with out of bounds skiing. Its a choice to adventure to an area "At Your Own Risk". Those involved understood the inherent risks of the terrain in which they chose to play. This is unfortunately a sad example of even the most knowledgeable and experienced still being at the mercy of nature. It's a breed apart that feels the drive to ski in the untouched powder, but really is no different than many of us following our passions - theirs just happened to have more risk involved. RIP, guys. You've touched many and leave big boots to be filled. MrCrowley, you should be ashamed to throw out other names. These are Dan's friends too and deserve respect. Unfortunately we can't go back to help them make a safer decision.

Hope they didn't have families who were dependent on them. If they did, I hope they had life insurance. Apparently skiing out of bounds is a must for some people. They they rolled the dice and bit the ice.

What a great way to go guys. Like all of us you've came and went from earthly bodies dozens of times. I'm sure this was one of the most adventurous (satisfying) of your many exits from the physical. So, Chris, Jim & John: I am grateful to each of you for reminding me and a few of us to "have fun and take chances" And as the real Wise Ones know: From this moment on___Your Life is Forever. I thank you Mugs ,, with all of my heart.

Just one word to describe these morons. STUPIDY!!! It dosen't matter what level of skier you think you are. Your chances of surviving an avalanche are very slim. Charge the cost of retrieving their bodies to their families. They had no business being out there at all.

I don't understand why people need to ski or board in the out of bounds area. I realize its not illegal but doesn't "Out Of Bounds" mean "Don't Go There"? Sad how a day of fun can turn so quickly. Praying for the friends and families of the victims.

Yep anybody can ski anywhere they want, thats a fact. But, when the big day comes don't do the bleeding heart oh whoa is us garbage. These people were well over 21 and knew exactly what they were doing and where they were doing it at. Take your chances and pay the bill. My concern is how much it costs the tax payers to dig them out.

"It's surprising that they would choose to go into an out of bounds area." Not really that's where the good skiing is for people like this. This area was out of bounds, not off limits. Big difference. They were also equipped for problems - beacons, shovels and probes and they knew how to use them. But that won't stop the usual suspects who get tuckered out walking to the fridge for their left over Big Macs from ragging on the dead.

ESPN says that all were from Leavenworth with one being the Stevens Pass director of marketing and another being the freeskiing World Tour head judge. It's surprising that they would choose to go into an out of bounds area.

Read somewhere that a witness noticed several groups of people knowingly climb out-of-bounds at the same time, as many as 18 people. Not one of these folks thought this might not be the safest thing to do. They thought more or fresher snow was worth their lives? Unbelievable self-entitlement. Can't think of a better example of why we should heed warnings and obey the rules of society.

Get bent, motorhome1. Grief is to each it's own. Dangerous Dan is a great person. A stupid name??? No more stupid than skiing out of bounds in red flag conditions........

Well, gone are 3 people who will never be on that run again crowley. Sad day for the families of those lost, never a good day when bodies are recovered. Sounds like these people knew what they were doing and were properly equipped. Not much one can do about a 3000' slide. Around 2 feet of new snow in 24 hours keeps most near the lifts. BTW, before the mid 90s a lot of back country near ski areas was less traveled all across the country. One was saved due to an airbag being deployed. Be careful people, good reminder to never skip on safety. Hopefully the person who triggered the slide didn't know there were people below.

So tragic to lose people anytime-especially when they are on holiday. Thank you Liftmech for explaining our backyard to everyone. Isn't it Skyhomish? Doesn't matter under the circumstances. My heartgoes out to Washington families.

It was the greatest run until the mid-90's. Too many mediocre snowboarders w/ no ethic or clue about how to conserve backcountry powder and no clue about keeping numbers and runs to a minimum. It could ski it 5 times a day before running nightlifts at 3:30 all by my lonesome before 1994 and have no other tracks other than Dangerous Dan's and Armands all week long---and not ticket from the WSP......................gone are the days!!!

As I recall, it's not exactly a road. Tunnel Creek is a popular backcountry/sidecountry skiing spot outside of the Stevens Pass Ski Area, accessed from top of Barrier or 7th Heaven. It got some press in Powder Magazine a few years back, but it's been popular for decades. One skis one of the drainages off the backside and hitchhikes back up from the switchback on US 2.

Not good, I hope they find some survivors. I couldn't find this road on a map. Does anyone know if it's a FS Rd and what number. I'm assuming snow shoeing?
