Pastor calls for nationwide Starbucks boycott over gay marriage

SEATTLE – A Christian pastor is calling for a nationwide boycott of Starbucks for the company's support of same-sex marriage in Washington.

In a message published online a day before Washington's Senate passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, Pastor Steven Andrew of USA Christian Ministries predicted that the Seattle-based coffee giant could lose 80 percent of its customers if Christians get their coffee somewhere else -- a number he bases on his contention that 80 percent of Americans are Christian while just 1-to-2 percent of the population is homosexual..

Starbucks is one of more than 100 companies that pledged support for legalizing gay marriage in Washington.

“Starbucks is no longer fashionable,” writes Andrew in the post, which is headlined "Christians Boycott Starbucks – Because Romans 1 Explains Starbucks Hates God."

“If your church still uses Starbucks, then your pastor is a friend of the world," Andrews argues. "God calls those who oppose Him ‘haters of God.’”

Echoing the sentiment of "hate the sin, love the sinner," Andrew also writes, “Jesus loves homosexuals.”

Andrew calls on Christians to share the boycott with their church congregations, adding, “Starbucks can follow Satan if they want to."

Washington's state House is expected to pass the same-sex marriage legislation next week, and Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) has said she will sign it. Opponents have vowed to put the measure before voters in a referendum this November.

In a non-scientific poll on KING5.com, 12 percent of people said they would never buy products again from a company that supported same-sex marriage, while 51 percent said they were more likely to buy products from those companies. Thirty-three percent said it would make no difference in their buying habits.

I am a straight, married male as well as a Christian. I think that the public and government should back out of telling an individual what they can do when it is something that is none of their business. God will be the one who makes the final judgement. We have more important things to worry about than same sex marriage. Let spend the time and money that is being spent on this to clean our government up and helping people in the USA. The Bible tells us to love mankind and not judge our fellow mankind.

Does this church practice: killing a child who hits or talks back their parents? Exodus 21:15 Slavery Ephesians 6:5 NLT Marry the person who rapes you. Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT I'm guesssing they don't practice any of these. The hypocrisy with many christians is just embarrassing

Bottom Line!! Since when DID THE CHURCH BECOME A TAX SHELTERED RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION AND BECOME A LEGISLATIVE POLITICAL ACTION GROUP??? I have always been of the understanding that churches/Ministors, Priests/etc. cannot spew their political belief on their congregation and still receive tax relief benefits..They are ministers of God and not ministers of supporting a political candidate. Sad part is, many of these religious zealots behind the pulpit brain wash their members and their word is the word they are receiving from God...dah! and these poor souls, like sheep, just follow and do whatever these so called men of God tell them to..don't use the God gift of their brains and become "brain washed" and full under the influence of "mind control" religion.

@Jerri, I remember the phrase in the Constitution separating church and state. It was taught to me by the ancient sages of the government schools. They were able to produce actual documents by John Dewey, Horace Mann and Karl Marx to prove it. The only god that makes mistakes is the god we call us.

If this church is going to boycott the corporations who came out in support of this legislation, they're going to going without a lot. Microsoft is one of those businesses. I abide by my faith, that's my relationship with God and my beliefs. But, we have this document called a Constitution that demands a separation of church and state. And as much as many of us follow the teachings expressed in the Bible, the Bible is not the constitution of the United States nor the constitution of the State of Washington. Just as there is a huge difference between God's law and Church doctrine, there is a difference between the scriptures of many religions and our Constitution. This legislation is about civil law and marriages, not about the sacraments that are bestowed and celebrated in our churches. The law that lets me practice my faith is the same law that allows for marriage equity. God doesn't make junk nor mistakes. We are all His children and deserve the love, respect of one another.

When did that church quit being a tax sheltered religious organization and become a legislative/political action group? They cannot be both in this country of freedom and EQUALITY. Unlike the old world, this country is not run by the church. The Bible states that we are ALL sinners and may cite some forms of marriage or relationships as a sin. Why are you casting the first stone?? No church in the Bible was awarded the right to judge anyone. That power has been reserved for someone much greater than any church. You may give guidence to your flock - but not society. Now I have to go out a buy a Starbucks Coffee in support of equal rights..

More wierd bible thumping fantasies. The rapture is in the same wackadoodle department such as angels, the virgin birth, walking on water, raising the dead and the rest of that nonsense. The holy rollers say "Gawd is gonna take us to heaven!" And I say "So leave already!" JacksonM......"Your religion is not my religion, so don't force your beliefs on me." What a joke! "IN GOD we trust" is on our currency. Before you can testify in court, you're forced to swear on a BIBLE. In the pledge of allegiance there's "one nation UNDER GOD". You bible thumpers have been forcing your religion down our throats since day one.

I am Christian (ironically, we don't drink coffee in my religion so I guess I boycott them everyday......). I think that they can back whomever they please based on their personal convictions (even though I happen to disagree with them). My disagreement is only based on the fact that the way this legislation is written will obligate people who believe and feel differently (due to religious belief) to participate in activities that are contrary to their personal convictions. I honestly feel like it reaches into my personal life and compels me to agree (because now there is a legal repercussion) with how someone else chooses to live their life. I honestly feel that I can disagree with someone and still respect them and their ability to choose. I wish we could get some legislation written that would respect both groups involved in this issue.

As Christians we are not to judge or to live a sinful life. Yet we are imperfect , just like everyone else and will sin, the difference being we are forgiven because we know Christ paid for them. Education is key and living by the bilbe is very HARD. The Pastor is passing judgement and that in and of itself is sin. Rather he should; John 13:34 New International Version (NIV) 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Romans 12:2 New International Version (NIV) 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Jesus faced a mob that was eager to execute a woman caught in adultery. He put a stop to it with a simple challenge: anyone who has no sin in their life should step forward and throw the first stone.

If you are against same sex marriage, then don't marry a gay person, problem solved. This pastor needs to keep his religion and his interpretation of his bible out of our lives, didn't ask for his advice, don't want it, and don't need it thank you very much. This guy is a cook and he likes to cherry pick from the bible as many people do. For example, they like to quote that homosexuality is bad, but slavery, killing your offspring for disobeying you, beating your wife occasionally for not being submissive, etc.. all of that can be ignored. The bible, an over 2000 year old book that's been translated numerous times with stories told by ingorant sheep herders that didn't understand what they were seeing at the time. The only thing we got out of it was an imaginary best friend with infinite omnipotent ability who needed to create a loop hole by sacrificing himself in order to save our mortal souls instead of just saving our mortal souls afterall he did create biblical law didn't he?

I am just sad at all the bashing of Christianity. You people REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND what it is all about. I agree many who call themselves Christians are not walking the talk and that also bothers me. It is about a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus and NOT about RELIGION. I am sure God weeps at the way HIS creation is carrying on with one another. The thing is...ALL of us have sinned and come short of God's glory. And it is more about repentance (each ONE OF US) than it is about being RIGHT. We need to stop pointing the finger at others and take care of our own evil tongue and heart...the things that we each say and do to each other. WIth every 1 finger we point at others there are 4 pointing back at ourselves. NO, the Bible is NOT ARCHAIC or OUTDATED. It is just as revelant today as it was 2000 years ago. It's just that we refuse to submit to what God desires for us to do and that is to humble ourselves and obey His commands. But hardness of hearts is what I am seeing here.

You seem to need to be told your O.K but it will never help you because Your not ok. You want us to accept our behavior because you need reassurance that you are not perverse. Being a Christian myself, I would say that the freedom to choose is the most important thing. Others may not believe what you believe but they have the right to choose their own path. As long as you do not abuse your freedom of choice by harming others than you should be able to do what you want. I also do not believe that a few people abusing a freedom should cause the rest of the country to have to give up that said freedom, but I digress. That is a topic for another day.

Pastor Steven Andrew----You obviously either never studied the Bible in its entirety, or have opted to ignore the many verses regarding the fact that neither man, nor the Church has the right, or obligation sit in judgement of his fellow man, as that judgement is God's right, and ONLY Gods right. I have not been a patron of Starbucks as I find their coffee over roasted, but I think I'll go in and buy a hot chocolate because an overzealous, judgmental twit such as yourself says I should boycott anyone because of his personal bigotry. It is the actions of people like you that are causing a downturn in church attendance. It is not because they do not believe in the Bible, but they do not want to follow individuals like you that do follow the teaching contained in the Holy Book, but seem to spout their prejudices as being God's will. I am straight myself, but this is truly about freedom to live the lifestyle of anyone's choice not someone who simply ignores God's right of judgement

I hate the phrase "hate the sin, love the sinner..." What a cop out. Since what you define as the sin is inherent in who that person is, in reality you still "hate" the sinner. Since when is hate a part of Christ's message to the world. Love thy neighbor, let he who is without sin cast the first stone...these are the messages I remember from the church I attended as a child. Societies are not cast in stone, they are ever changing. There are so many other pressing issues we need to solve, this is not one of them. I totally agree with garmo 98. If you are going to get involved in politics then you lose your right to be tax free. So then it should be the Indians freedom and no one elses? Grow up. You are talking centuries ago. I may not be a religious person, but its so funny to read about his and all the comments. I love it. And just because of this artical, the company I work for ordered from Starbucks today. That was over 90 drinks!

one thing someone should tell the opponents. is that god/bible also says" Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law." "Love each other. Just as I have loved you""Love your neighbor as yourself." you also have to remember that the bible they are quoting is when we need some population

I don't understand how people can call themselves Christians and display hatred as this pastor does. He sure elicited some anger in me - but towards him and his views. So, instead of making myself some coffee at home I will go and buy my coffee at Starbucks for a while . It sure is worth the money to me to show that I believe in love and not hate. How can this group of "Christians" misinterpret God's message so completely?

It's interesting that in the midst of all this hate-centered "Christianity" several facts are forgotten. First of all, the choke hold some feel belongs to "the church" regarding marriage is a farce. Today, anyone with a computer and $10 can obtain the right to perform a marriage. That's because, like it or not, marriage in this country has everything to do with taxes ad property rights. Where you worship has nothing to do with the legal requirements or advantages. Secondly, we have no state religion; hence the concept of separation of church and state. Perhaps it's time we all called the church bluff. If you want to dabble in political issues then do so; just pay taxes on your property, your buildings, and the income you beg and bully for every Sunday. If not, then return to the business of spiritual uplifting.

My questions: Why does KING5 seem so intent on promoting his cause on both Ch 5 and NWCN ch 2? If churches are going to promote and fund legislation why are they tax exempt? This is a cut and paste from USA ministries: The First Amendment of our Christian nation says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of [one Christian denomination] religion, or prohibiting the free exercise [of Christian religion] thereof…” The First Amendment is not meant for other religions but to allow Americans to practice Christianity in their Christian denomination. Our Founding Fathers declared independence with Christian liberty. Also notice the oaths taken in our nation to God on the Holy Bible. By including the Holy Bible we show this is to the LORD not a foreign god. It is important to understand these two points about our Founding Fathers. They believed: 1. Christian faith is the most important part of life, and 2. USA freedom is for Christian freedom, not all “freedoms”.

If, as Pastors like Andrews believe that humans are made in "God's" image....They MUST include Gays, because sexual orientation is determined by genotype and steroid hormonal activity around the time of birth. IT IS NOT A MATTER OF CHOICE. Consequently, Gays deserve rights equal to those of heterosexuals. Andrews just confirms that "The Christian Right is Neither".

That Pastor HAS just as much right to express his views as anyone else because he is just as protected under the Constitution of the United States as anyone else is and to say he shouldn't have tax exemption for his church is rediculous. We have freedom OF religion not freedom FROM religion. Your rights to Freedom of Religion and the free exercise thereof means: The Freedom of Religion is an inalienable right. The First Amendment provides for the Freedom of Religion for all Americans. The Free Exercise Clause provides that government will neither control nor prohibit the free exercise of one’s religion. The government will remain neutral. So whine, belly ache, criticize, slam, excuse etc. all you want. We Christians DO have the RIGHT to voice our opinions regardless if you like what is said or not. You people say a lot of things we don't like too. We still have rights and saying that this Pastor should lose tax exempt status is just "stone throwing."

Dear Pastor Steven Andrews and your followers. It's time to come to terms with the times and accept Marriage equality. While you must think you are doing a fine job preaching scripture, It's obvious that you are not retaining it. God and Jesus practiced compassion and love. While you may think that same sex marriage is not traditional, Love between two humans is. You may think that homosexuality is a choice. It's not. You can't help who you fall in love with. As for boycotting Starbucks. Good for you! I assume that you are also boycotting Microsoft and Google as well. Oh wait with your views, I can only assume that you still use rock and chisel since they are so outdated. These are just a few of the many companies who have supported this. One more thing, I don't believe in Organized religion, It has trashed may lives and cause strife in history. But I won't go out tomorrow and start a petition to ban organized religion! Wise up! I agree with mr_conservative There IS a LOT of Biblical ignorance out there. And there is also a lot of BIBLICAL ignorance among many who CLAIM to be Christians as well. And I think that is why (in part) some of you have a difficult time accepting church, Christians and Christianity. Christians are just sinners too and that includes Pastors. The ONLY difference is we are saved from our terrible sinfulness ONLY by the grace and mercy of our God and our Lord Jesus Christ who died in our deserved place on the cross. He conquered the grave that we all deserve to be left in and rose again so that by BELIEVING in HIm we might be forgiven and saved from what we ALL deserve. We are called to REPENTANCE FROM our sins and to walk in OBEDIENCE to Him. And yes, we all fail at that a lot of the time. It is NOT EASY to walk in Jesus footsteps. But we are learning to every day. Please forgive us for where we have caused you to stumble. But we still have freedom of speech just as you do.

I have read a good bit of the articles and most of them are against the Christians for speaking their piece. Most of the statements even go to the point of removing the Christians freedom of speech. Isn't that against the Constitution as well? If the people that are Christian do stop from purchasing their coffees from Starbucks, what is it to you? It just means that you do not have to put up with their mouths and Scripture while you are in the line. Correct. We cannot take anyones freedoms, now can we? If they want to bring it back up on a bot by all the people, then let them do it. It is their freedom to do so. If you listen to them, they are not against the people, just the act that is considered to be sin in the Bible. Who are the biggots now? Matter of fact, let the Christians speek, and then you do the same if you so desire. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. See, I too am a Christian and I do not hate you, just the sin. Have a good day, please.

Okay so maybe 80% of the population is Christian. So what? 80% of the population does NOT believe this guy’s draconian babble. Lots of Christians actually believe in equality, including marriage equality. There are more Christians who believe in marriage equality especially in regions where there are more Starbucks stores. These Christians believe in equality because they generally have a higher education which gives them the ability to be critical thinkers. This higher education in conjunction with their critical thinking ability also equates to better jobs which in turn gives them larger disposable incomes in which to spend on a Starbucks coffee. This is in stark contrast to places with lower educations who tend to more bigoted hateful people with lower incomes that probably don’t shop at Starbucks in the first place because they can’t afford it.

In Europe religion has little validity. Most remaining churches have few attendee's. Logic says what kind on god would do this to us? It sure wasn't a white man with a beard floating behind a cloud in the sky, it was us. Evil us. The evil that still trys to control us. The evil that points to some of us and tells the rest to hate those who don't follow the finger-pointers rules. Why? So the finger pointer can get free money from the flock. It's an old story that began long before the witch doctor. It succeeds because of ignorance. Yep, our public schools don't allow these charlatan's inside so the finger pointers say public schools are evil. Then they brainwash our youth in their own "schools". AND WE LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! Also, the first commandment of religion is to control our sexuality. Any exceptions?

Well, every religious book was wrote by a man and is not the word of "god". Why is it none of the books ever mention the dinosaurs? I wonder if it is because man wrote the books and I don't get why people follow the "teaching" of some random people that claimed they talked to "god". One reason people like to follow these books is because they feel they need answers about what happens when the end comes, others use it to push their own beliefs on people by quoting bits and peices of what people wrote. Honestly, if a person today said god spoke to them and you should follow his or hers teachings none of you would believe this person and would cast them crazy. Why? Why are they more crazy then people before your exsistence? Marriage use to be a religious event, but in america it has become a contract. If people with a diffrent sexual orientation want to be married in america, then you shouldn't see anything wrong with that. This is the land of the free and people forget that.

I avoid Christians like the plague. I have found in the past that once they realise that they can't convert you you are worthless to them, and often become their enemy. In the meantime you are just doing the same old thing, and hoping they will just go away and leave you alone - but suddenly you have a vendetta on your hands. Crazies like this guy are just trouble makers. I always question their motives when they come out like this. Hidden motives and agendas and all that.

I agree, lets boycott Christianity. It's all a bunch of BS anyway, and the "good book" is obviously written by people, not "God". There are way too many things in that book that just don't make sense. Adam and Eve were the first people on earth? and that's it? Really? Didn't they have two sons, who took wives? Where did the wives come from???? What about prehistoric man? They aren't mentioned in the bible. And how do we know that "God" created all of this in 6 days? I would think if "God" gave us this ridiculous book, that it would all make sense without having to take a huge leap of faith and overlook the glaring holes in the story.

gesus...you're WAY off regarding your comments about the Bible. It was written by many men who walked the same planet we do and they weren't paid for it. It never ceases to amaze me, when topics like this come up, how many people start bashing the Bible, religion, Christians, etc. I'd like to set something straight. NO WHERE in the Bible does God ever give men a right to judge others or their choices. He gave us ALL a free will to make our own choices. Not all of those choices are right, moral, or legal. This falls in one of those catagories; however, that's HIS right to judge, not ours. If people choose to live in a gay/lesbian lifestyle, that's their choice. God didn't create same sex marriage, BUT he loves people who chose it just the same and will Judge their choice on judgement day, just as He will the rest of us. I don't agree with same sex marriage, but won't bash those who do.

Marriage equality is a civil rights issue, not a religious issue. This country will never be run by the church. The days of religious persecution for anyones beliefs or non beliefs are over... The new "political activiist" pastor wants to boycot Starbucks for exercising their right of freedom of choice in their beliefs. Is he going to take on Microsoft next, and then all the other corporations which support our freedom of choice and freedom from religion. Churches are free to influence the lives of their members. But this actrivity is crossing the line between church and state. Many Catholics use birth control and favor marriage equality. Many churches are out of touch with society and are losing members because of their outdated illogical practices.

Is it okay in your eyes that black people have equal rights too? Marriage is a failed institution that has a divorce rate of over 50%, what does anyone care if people who love each other marry each other... Marriage, like Christmas is a secular tradition that all should be allowed to experience.. why? Because that's why we live in America so people can have some sort of freedom. Christianity is obviously man made and has no right to dictate laws in America.. Keep religion out of schools and out of our government. Its a sad day in America when a religious group is trying to prevent people from being happy in life. Makes me sick...

Love you neighbor as yourself, treat those as you would want to be treated, etc. From my christian upbringing, this is what I took away. I truly don't understand why people feel threatened by who loves who and what people do in their own private lives. None of these judgemental people are perfect and maybe they should be more concerned about themselves and their own inner demons instead of lashing out at everyone else. I think the only thing threatening the state of marriage is those who use it over and over again and don't take their vows seriously. All the straight people who get married and then get dviorced months later or who cheat on their spoouses over and over are more of a threat than anything. As for Starbucks, I stopped going there a long time ago because they threaten the state of coffee and how it tastes! Support local shops instead and learn to drink better coffee!

True Christians (just like true Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, etc) should be peaceful, accepting and forgiving. They may not agree with someones sexual preference, way of life, choices regarding abortion, etc - but we should never shun them, look down on them, bomb them, attack them, judge them or condemn them (lest we "be judged and be found wanting"!!). BTW - I am pro-same-sex marriage, pro-life (primarily because I am adopted and I'm grateful that I was given a chance to have a fantastic life instead of being aborted; and I would never EVER think poorly or judge someone who made the choice to have an abortion - that is a difficult decision to make and they need our support and love, not our venom), pro-alcohol, and against narrow minded judgemental people!

Again we have a "Man of God" calling down hell fire and brimstone as if he were a prophet while after reading his GOOD BOOK he has failed to read the part that says "love your brother as yourself" and to understand the instruction in this very loving book that as Christians, Showing love and living separate but within the world, not force change in it by forcing others to live the same way. The term " They will know us by our love" is lost in the rambelings of men and women who believe that they are the VOICE OF GOD and try to force you to live like them! It is this behavour in the religous world of Christanity that makes me want to remain detached from that group of people as a whole and serve my God in the way I have been taught. It is not for the Christian to force Christanity on the people. It is not for the Muslim to force his beliefe on anyone else nor is it the way of Budda to make slaves of it's believers! How can any person belong to a religion or believe in a God, Santa Claus or whatever, when that God, The Easter Bunny or whatever, doesn't include all peoples. It's a judgemental attitude. What is so hard to understand. Religion only serves the religous when the religious want it to. All religious beliefs and policies change when the followers need it to. U.S. is 80% christian? Possibly 200 years ago, before we were able to question it's tenets. I know it's difficult for people to accept that maybe their beliefs aren't popular anymore, but all Christians see the righting on the wall. The Christian ranks are getting smaller every year and hopefully my grandchildren will not have to have a discussion about how someone saw the baby Jesus's image on their meatlover's pizza.

If you are so against what people do with their own bodies and lives, then shame on you, it is not your business. If you are so anti-gay then you might as well stop buying anything from anywhere, because you never know who is gay that might have processed your communion wafer or made your robe.
