BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Police are warning residents that perhaps as many as three separate groups of thieves are targeting homes in the suburb just east of Lake Washington.
Extra patrols of squad cars and plain clothes detectives are working the hillside neighborhood--and getting some help.
“My husband put the system in around Christmas,” said Angela Le, of the security cameras ringing her home.
It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that it was fully functional and it caught some young would be thieves prowling around their home.
“They didn’t try to get in this time, and that made me feel better because I was at home,” said Le.
Either the men didn’t notice the cameras, or did not mind knowing they were being watched. In any case, they are now the stars of a YouTube video spreading through Newport Hills.
It’s been emailed, embedded, blogged and spread by word of mouth.
Le is making sure her community is connected over a wire, over the air, or face to face.
“This neighborhood has been secure for so long, the older people and young families, we are becoming more like a regular neighborhood and it is a shock,” said Le.
Le hopes someone will recognize the people in the video her system recorded and report them to police.
At the very least, putting the video out there, lets the crooks out there know, the people of Newport Hills are watching, and watching out for each other.
