BELLEVUE, Wash. - Three homes on West Lake Sammamish Parkway were damaged by a mudslide on Sunday. The road is closed indefinitely. Another home was evacuated.

“I was walking the garbage back down the cul de sac and I heard a tremendous crash and I looked to see the whole side the hill crashing down,” said Richard Crinzi, who lives three doors down.

“I screamed at the people in the house ... they were OK," he said.

Crinzi said the slide lifted a garage with at least one car inside.

The slide broke a water line and a gas line.

Fire officials say the mud has covered half of the road, which is heavily used by commuters, and is spread over about 40 feet.

West Lake Sammamish Parkway is closed from NE 2nd at Northup to SE 26th until further notice,  with local access only.

It's not clear if the water main break caused the slide or the slide caused the break.

City officials say the road is undermined and will be closed indefinitely.

Weowna Park occupies much of the uphill slope above the slide area, so I wouldn't think development would be the cause. It looks like the grade beneath the roadway washed out, rather than a slide from above taking it out. I would guess this was caused by either a small stream undermining the roadway, or by the water main bursting. The concrete slabs which make up much of the parkway heave up and down from the settlement common in this area. That have caused the water main to break. This is the 3rd major slide along the parkway in the 10 years I've lived here. One was caused by a large amount of saturated backfill sliding down across the road, while the other by a blocked drainage line which create a large lake on the uphill side of the parkway. The lake eventually washed over the roadway, down the slope and through a house on the lake.

I'm glad everyone is safe, but this was bound to happen. There has been too much overdevelpoment of the West Lake Samm area for years. This section I have noticed all the new homes being built on the hill side, clearing away green belt. I hope they do not get a chance to rebuild, but have to move out. Sorry you built for the location and view, not for sound civil planning. The cash strapped municipalities will permit anything as long as they get there money.

@btvsrcks - Indefinitely means for an unknown amount of time, not forever. An assessment of the scope of work for cleanup - as well as conditions uncovered during the cleanup - will help determine how long the road is closed.

Indefinitely? really? I find that a little hard to believe.. For a long while maybe, but I'm fairly certain that someday that road will open again.

Additional pictures were added later with update. Prior report and pictures didn't indicate property damage.
