COVINGTON, Wash. -- The Kent School District is considering closing schools to narrow the budget gap.  But some parents aren't going down without a fight.

Jennifer Harjehausen stood up Thursday night in front of her local PTA meeting and broke the bad news that Cedar Valley elementary school is being targeted for closure.

"The big thing is school closures," said Jennifer.  "They're doing an analysis of Jenkins Creek and Cedar Valley and we've been warned as one under consideration."

That doesn't sit well for Jennifer, the mother of a second grader and a fourth grader at the school.

"I like everything here, and it should stay the same," said fourth grader, Jack Harjehausen.

Jennifer believes the school serves a purpose in her Covington neighborhood.

"That's why we bought a house here, it's right next to the school," said Jennifer.

But the state's fourth largest district spread out of 72 square miles says it is considering shuttering Cedar Valley and nearby Jenkins Creek elementary Because of their small size and dwindling state and federal funding.

"After five years we've picked all the low hanging fruit, and done all the rearranging we can," said Chris Loftis, Kent School District Spokesperson.

Jennifer has put together a website, and a Facebook page in a push to save the ethnically diverse school.

"We are a majority minorty school which means there are fewer white kids here than any other school is Covington and that is a great thing," said Jennifer.

She hopes it'll be enough to convince the district.  By the time it counts all the nickels and dimes there are other ways to save a few dollars.

The board could be looking to cut up to $10 million from next year's budget.

It will receive a closure analysis on February 22nd and then vote on whether to proceed.

I completely agree with you sailorgirl! The comment left by "ithappensallthet" really upsets me, because it doesn't accurately reflect the area. We own a home very close to Timberlane and it's like any other American subdivision. The area around Cedar Valley IS NOT crime infested. The neighborhoods surrounding our school are peaceful and are full of families. I have never felt unsafe here(we've lived here for approximately four years). You'll always see people exercising or walking their dogs or pushing strollers. My son absolutely loves his school and my family enjoys living here in Covington. My son's so worried that Cedar Valley will close. I told him that the whole community is fighting to save it. @ jackwong-thanks for your empathetic stance. :) -Sunnye

My kids go to this school and they would be absolutely devastated if it ends up being shut down. There are other ways the district can cut costs and save money. Honestly, closing down an elementary school is not going to save them a whole lot of money; and the damage that will be done will be much further reaching. And in regards to your comments "ithappensallthet" I live in Timberlane, as do most of the families and kids who go to Cedar Valley Elementary. The homeowner's association has been making some pretty good progress ever since a shift was made a couple of years ago. I've lived here for over 6 years as a homeowner and I love my neighbors and have never experienced any of this horrific crime you are speaking of. Yes, we get the occasional jerks who like to go through mailboxes, and some dumb kids who tag a fence every now and then. But let's not make Timberlane sound like East Compton here, because it's definitely not. My kids have very much enjoyed growing up here.

This is really sad. My kid grew up in this area from kindergarten and made lifelong friends that went to both these schools. Unfortunately these two schools lay right smack dab in the middle of Timberlane that is a magnet for drug deals and gang members. A lot of those houses are rentals and are pretty shady. If the homeowners association would crack down and do something to clean the area up, more people would buy homes there and the quality of living would be better producing a higher quality residential group that wouldn't mind paying the property tax for the schools. Instead, the homeowners that rent out the homes don't care what happens there. (Most of them anyway). They don't live in the neighborhood, they got out because of the direction it was going. After living there for 20 years I couldn't take waking up one more night with the sheriff’s helicopter shining in my back yard chasing a thug. It's too bad. That area had a lot of potential.

I realize that a state income tax is less regressive then a sales tax but I would only support it if they eliminated the sales tax. But frankly we need to go back to a fairer tax structure like we had from the 40's through the 70's. The rich were still rich and the middle class was the strongest in our history. But that also means we have to change our trade policies and that won't happen so I guess it's get use to living with less and less while our politicians play chase the dollar giving more and more to the wealthy and corporations.

@jackwong: if you have so much money left over, then send it to the state. I'm sure they will know what to do with it. as for me and my family, we are broke. as I am sure so are a lot of other familes...

Ummm.... how about NO?!?!?!?! This is the time to start thinking about a State Income Tax again... we are one of the last states to not have one.
