KING 5 Poll: Seattle not sold on Mayor McGinn

SEATTLE -- Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn gave his third state of the city address on Tuesday, attended mostly by enthusiastic city workers and department heads.

More than two years since he took office, McGinn enjoys the approval of just one-third of Seattle citizens, according to a new KING 5 News poll.

Fifty percent of respondents said they disapprove of the job the mayor is doing, compared with 33 percent who approved and 18 percent who said they were not sure.

Male respondents were more likely to have a definite opinion about McGinn: Just 10 percent said they were unsure about the mayor's job performance, with 51 percent saying they disapproved and 38 percent saying they approved.

Among women, 27 percent said they approved of the mayor's performance, while 48 percent disapproved. A quarter of women said they were unsure how to rate McGinn's performance.

McGinn's strongest approval rating came from voters in the 18 to 34 range, with 39 percent of this group saying they approved of the mayor's job performance. Voters between 18 and 49 gave McGinn a 35 percent approval rating, while voters 50 and over only gave him a 27 percent approval rating.

McGinn's approval rating trailed that of the Seattle City Council (42 percent) and public schools superintendent Susan Enfield (47 percent).

But the mayor had a higher approval rating than Seattle Police Chief John Diaz (30 percent) and the city's school board (30 percent).

McGinn is scheduled to deliver his annual state of the city address on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

An attorney and environmental campaigner, McGinn survived a three-way primary in August 2009 that saw incumbent mayor Greg Nickels fail to make it through to the runoff election. In the November general election, he came from behind to beat businessman Joe Mallahan, winning 51 percent of the vote.

As mayor, McGinn has championed public transit and bicycling initiatives, as well an effort to extend late-night hours for bars and nightclubs. His handling of the downtown viaduct replacement project angered some supporters who thought McGinn's championing of a public referendum conflicted with a campaign commitment not to oppose plans to replace the aging structure with a deep bore tunnel.

Problems with the Seattle Police Department have plagued McGinn's tenure as well, with the Justice Department releasing a highly critical report in December citing SPD's excessive use of force and poor treatment of minority communities.

A new basketball and hockey arena proposal unveiled last week by McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine could be a boon to the mayor. The same KING 5 poll found that more than half of Seattleites are very or somewhat enthusiastic about the prospect of pro-basketball returning to the city.

CORRECTION: An earlier version misreported Mayor McGinn's approval among young voters. The version above has been corrected (5th paragraph).

i have been watching from Shoreline and i would like to thank the Mayor of Seattle for having cared for those people who don't own cars and have no shelters. their attitudes that allow places like tent city and the Missions to exist also allow the poor hope for the future. the children of the city know more about the future than moon boomers will ever dream of. i would hope for a federal or state position if not already in place between the city government and the unions a liaison of sorts. more effective than a lobbyist able to have access or input to economic policy planning - a vote in the matter. their union reps have keen insight in the local activities and positive attitudes. this would also allow communication between the counties and larger or smaller to occur any way there would be greater transparency of views

Cannot wait to vote him out of office, then immediately move to Kirkland. During the election, his supporters were painting Mallahan as some corporate shill just for being a dept vp at T-Mobile. What did McGinn do to show off his awesome people skills? In his response to Seattle not being billed for cost overruns on the Viaduct Tunnel, he called the Governor a liar, threatened to kill off the entire project. Was the lone vote against the 520 bridge because it didnt have light rail. Hired a guy who flat out lied on his resume, then immediately hired Hiller from the Cascade club, paying him 85,000$ a year with a very weak resume and when the press called him on this, he treated them like children. Scolding the local press for doing their job, man what was he thinking! Politically he doesn't have a friend outside the city and in the city, only a third of the population might call him a friend.

It is the same with every politician. You can't please all of the people. If you spend a bullion dollars for show removal equipment that gets 10 miles pit on it every year, some will be happy because they dint have to walk an extra block to the bus stop, but others will complain about the waste of money. if you clear the downtown area first, the outer areas will cry. If you use sand, people will cry for salt. If you use salt, people will complain about rust. If you go to Paris for the air show, you will hear about the money wasted. If you stay home, you heat about not promoting the state. All you can do is what you think is right and tell the fools to kiss your rear.

One more testimonial as to what citizens really think of the joke at the top of the Seattle city government hierarchy, good ol' Mayor McMuffin! Time to propose/rollout another Green, budget busting hairbrained scheme that will line your pockets$$ I suppose...as I've said it's no wonder the rest of the country is LAUGHING at us, hey we asked for it, got it and more! Just like the Chinese/World are laughing at us as they loan us and our genius President more high interest $$!! All the while gas prices go up, up, up as he decides we don't need a pipeline and the Canadians help...let them sell that oil to China instead, Brilliant!!

... and its really amusing to read the comments that are, essentially, name-calling and political punditry without a single direct comment to the story or, really, any facts -- lots of opinion, though ... and lots of vitriolic criticism, though ... easy to complain, difficult to lead ... why don't some of you just, say, run for office?

The problems with the SPD pre-date the current mayor... aside from the other things briefly mentioned, the City isn't running a huge deficit, there seems to be a balanced approach being taken with respect to most cuts that have been made, and there's been noticeable improvements to transit. What's disheartening about these polls is that King5 doesn't reveal their polling method, the sample size, the statistical margin of error, etc. Without all this, this poll, like may done in the media, are pretty meaningless.

He can paint green boxes, which no one knows what they mean...but can't hook up water to for the homeless living in tents? He is killing small business with the increase in downtown parking fees. This is a tax and spend AND borrow liberal of the worst order. Try conducting business downtown... impossible. He needs to find a job in a bike shop .... as a mayor he is a bust.

Gee, wonder why Seattle workers are not warming up to McGinn? He found money for bicyclist, but cannot find any money to fix a road signal in West Seattle. He found money for Occupy, by taking funding out from Seattle Central University's budget, but cannot find any time or money to fix a road signal in West Seattle. Hum? Is there a tread of cold shoulder to working tax payers? ...or is it just cold shoulder to people driving cars? That's right he wanted to tax the people who own cars to subsidized people who do not ride cars. Isn't this the same Major who consistently find city project in front of parking garages to restrict the parking in the city? Gee, wonder why motorist are not warming up?

The mayor needs to go! Diaz also needs to go! Diaz hasn't improved the Seattle police force the issues have only been worse since he took his chief position! The mayor hasn't done much if anything to help! It is as if he is turning a blind eye and trying to stay out of the situation! I am all for letting your police chief try to resolve the situation but when he cannot then the mayor needs to step in and replace him with someone who can! Seattle officers are out of control and have been for some time! Find who has been training them and replace that person because he isn't training them correctly! Their macho bullying attitudes are what the people do NOT need!

That's because he is a far left liberal loon who doesn't really have a clue about real civic responsibility. Most of these so called "Activists" have never held a real job that either creates a product or a service that is useful to society. That is why they become 'activists'. If it's all about talking and not really DOING anything its a wonderful career choice. Once they get into a position of real responsibility they almost always fail in all respects. By catering to his far left career environmentalists he has even lost a large part of the left in his city.

Seattle could sink into the Sound as far as I care. And they are getting exactly what they elected for mayor....a real idiot. SanFrancisco North will never change, that is for sure. But the bigger issue is not just the mayor, but the entire political establishment. Hopelessly larded with self-dealing and corruption, top to bottom.

I don't care so much about corrupt cops since you'll never completely eliminate them. The bigger the police force the greater the corruption. What I think is criminal is screwing over the city's arterials by putting bike lanes in them that are only used three or four months out of the year.

andyblue.....who's lashing out calling names now? YOU! For those who want to rant about political party....I can't blame them. When an area has been completely controlled by one party for decades people have a right to be upset and want change....thus one of the reasons Obama got into the White House. You may call some "deranged"....but please do look in the mirror before you do. I've voted for both sides of the Isle and DO live in the area.

Seattle, the most corrupt police dept, prosecutors and judges in the country. Its pathetic. 1. drug test ALL officers (we issue weapons to these people and we cant drug test them? RIDICULOUS!!) 2. Fire any officer PROVEN to lie on their report. (there are many already proven to lie) 3. Change the law that allows all officers at the scene to take the fifth in abuse cases. (1200 cases last year and ALL took the fifth) Then I will believe we are on the right track. Until then Seattle police are completely CORRUPT and FACTUALLY PROVEN so.

Why is it that a city as great as Seattle truly elects or hires less than the best candidate? Our mayor isn't what we need. It is honestly all about him and a lot about bikes. The Police Chief came in with too much baggage and too many 'friends' on the force that he can't do his job effectively . . . or was not trained to run a force the size of Seattle PD. Then there is the Sheriff . . . I had great hopes for her but alas, I was wrong. She is so much like Diaz and covers for her rogue deputies like he does for his officers. We need to clean house and start over.

I wish they had polled me, his approval numbers would have been down one more click. Thank goodness we only have two years left of this buffoon. On a sidenote, Greg Nickels is running for State Office, Secretary of State. Hey Teddy Ruxpin, how about going and getting a job outside of the public eye, like say, in Oregon. McGinn and Nickels both think they are the Kings of the City, and neither of the emperors have any clothes. Let's do something next time that we haven't done in a very long time, stop electing the same guy, that mold is worn out.

Don't forget that the Mayor rides his bike every day to work on the worst bottleneck of them all with bus stop islands, Dexter Avenue. Paid for by our city CAR tab fees. When are they going to start charging the cyclists? The answer is to require an Urban Bicycle License reflector that indicates you have completed an urban bicycle safety program. All fees can self-sustain their beloved bike lanes.
