LA PUSH, Wash. -- The U.S. House approved a bill Monday that will allow the Quileute tribe to move its school and other buildings out of a tsunami zone on the Washington coast to higher ground in Olympic National Park.

The land transfer bill gives the tribe 785 acres in the park and settles a reservation boundary dispute. In return the tribe assures access to coastal beaches that are reached by trails through tribal lands.

Following the earthquake and tsunami that devestated Japan in March, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D, Wash.) and Rep. Norm Dicks (D, Wash.) co-sponsored bills (H.R. 1162, S. 636) to move the tribal lands away from the water and out of reach of a deadly tsunami.

The Quileute Reservation covers one square mile. It is surrounded by the Olympic National Park on three sides as well as the Pacific Ocean.

La Push was among the first Washington communities to receive a tsunami warning siren, and practice evacuation drills in 2005. Still, there is only one road out of town.

we are simply asking for a chance to preserve what is left...our culture that is taught in our school that sits in a flood and tsunami zone. The fish house, restra, tribal offices, our homes. Its not to much to help preserve what we have left in our community. One road in one road out, what happens to us when it floods? when theres trees down over the road?quit being selffish. if something major happens to another town you get disaster relief and everyone to help... we are just trying to take preventative steps.

waterdevil , do you seriously believe that? Darn those Indians, taking the land right out from under good 'ol euro-Americans. Oh, wait. Anyone can move their business if they buy a new locale, but the Indian nations have alloted land; much of it is unuseable and in poor locations, just as the US government intended over 100 years ago.

Yeah, we've been so kind to those ungrateful" injuns" ever since we occupied their homeland - please, stop with the BS.

This is just another case of bending over backwards for the Indians. Good job Cant Tell.. We are now basically going to double their reservation size, (ok, 640 acres to a square mile) but you have to know, next will come the casino. There always was access to the "beach" and trails. So, anyone else living on the coast, can they expect to get their business moved to a higher ground? No, who is paying for the move by the way. Again, way to go Cant tell and friends.. I am sure you will be rewarded with lots of smoked salmon and cooked crabs..

Seems llike a fair swap and a good deal for both sides. What they are getting is land that the NP doesn't use, doesn't plan to use and no one really wants to visit it. Now, the Quileute's will be much safer. The people that rent cabins down by 1st Beach won't be.
