SUMMIT, Wash. – Sheriff’s deputies had to use a taser to finally stop a hatchet-wielding man who drove off in one of their patrol cars.

Deputies were responding to some sort of disturbance call at 17212 84th Avenue East in South Hill. They arrived to find a man, carrying on hatchet, who apparently had tried to enter four different vehicles.

He was chased on foot, but somehow circled back and smashed out the driver’s side window of one of the patrol cars and drove off.

Deputies say he drove up Canyon Road, hitting four other vehicles as he weaved in and out of traffic.

Once he reached Highway 512 in Summit, he stopped and ran away. Deputies caught up to him and used a taser to subdue him. The man fell and hit his head on the cement.

The man was taken to the hospital with no serious injuries.

What the public also needs to know: My father in law was hit by this stolen vehicle. He is 83 years old, lives in a retirement home on a fixed income and only had liability insurance. The Pierce County Sherriff office insurance refuses to take responsibility because the car was stolen. I contacted the Sherriff office to inquire of their responsibility and although they confirmed that the keys were in the car, as were police guns, they feel they have no responsibility. I have to question how we as citizens should respond to knowing that the very people we pay to protect us have a policy to leave keys and guns in police vehicles and obviously at access to such individuals as this. Does this policy actually put the public at risk? I think so. Additionally, I would hope that before a high speed chase is considered, the police department would have weighed in key factors to assess the risk and then be accountable for their decision and the outcome of harm to the public.

Well the jerk off slammed into one of our semi trucks on Canyon Rd. I wish they would have shot the SOB dead. This IS becoming more and more frequent and needs to stop.

The cops should have used their guns instead. I'm sure they could've justified the shooting considering he's waving a hatchet. Now we have to waste taxpayer money on the court system, medical expenses, imprisioning and feeding this waste of human life that's soon to return back out onto the streets. A 30 cent bullet is cheaper and would insure this scumbag doesn't continue his life of crime.

Didn't some private citizens catch a hatchet weilding man last week trying to break into something? Is this the same man? I heard the private citizen tridd to tazer a hatchet weilding man but missed and the officers confiscated it and were deciding to file charges or not against the citizen trying to protect himself and property. Cops use a tazer as well but actually take him down... Good job! This guy sounds dangerous... Arm yourselves against crooks and violent people with weapons! Crime is getting really bad! Carry concealed if the law allows you to... It is quick and easy and only costs ~$50 in Washington state. Takes about 1-1 1/2 weeks to arrive in the mail. The police cannot protect you from crazies like this! There are too many of them these days and not enough officers to be everywhere when violent criminals commit their crimes.
