Dan and Wendy Lerch are the bravest people I have met in a long time. They stood in front of television cameras today and answered questions about the most horrible night of their life, the night their daughter Heather died.

Heather was killed in a one-car crash this February. Her parents matched police reports and phone records and determined she was texting and driving at the time of the crash. Innocuous texts, trivial texts, "cool, let's hang out some time" kind of texts, just meaningless teenage blather that cost Heather her life and Dan and Wendy a daughter.

Now the parents are stepping up to the challenge of moving on with their lives and using the tragedy to educate others about the dangers of "distracted driving," in particular, driving while phoning or texting.

They are the focus of a Public Service Announcement produced by the State Department of Licensing and are allowing Heather's car to be displayed publicly to show how dangerous it is to take your eyes off the road.

"We see them all the time" says Dan. "Texting. Texting and driving. Crossing lanes of traffic, impeding other drivers. It's something that's a reality. Look at my daughter's car."

"Maybe we can save some other people's lives," said Wendy, pointing to the crumpled mess where her daughter lost her life. "They see that and that's real."

The Lerch's were part of a presentation by the DOL, Washington State Patrol and State Senator Tracey Edie who worked to get a new law on the books that will make texting or phoning while driving (unless hands-free) a primary and ticketable offense. That law takes effect June 10 - not soon enough for Dan and Wendy Lerch, two grieving parents who are breaking through their personal pain to warn others about the dangers of the road.

You people aren't getting the point though...okay so you don't like the fact that it's about fining people who are caught talking or texting on a cellphone, I guess they know better than anyone that taking it out of your pocket is the best way to get your attention! And don't give me that nonsense about it not working, it does work. I know alot of people who drive the speed limit along I-5 after being pulled over and ticketed for speeding a few times too many. Just like little children, I guess adults have to have their little hands spanked until they're red before they will simply abide by the law and quit stomping their feet and whining about how unfair it is.

@ whatnext. You are freaking genius! What about passengers? Are they not allowed to use the phone when the car is moving?

So, you have 50 people on a bus commuting to work in Seattle that can't use their phone because they are moving? Ya, that may not work.

The problem isn't with the cell phones.. Its the people behind the wheel.. 90% of the drivers on the road today have no friggen clue how to drive... So learn how to drive first before you take on talking on a cell phone..

browndog,,I'm not saying that it dosn't cause crashes I'm saying that it was ALWAYS going to be a primary offense, but the news wants to make it out that things like this are the reason they are making it a primary and it isnt, they always planned it to be a primary..my point is NEVER trust what they say when they say a law will be secondary ect.. because all they are doing is getting people used to the idea before making a primary..same thing as with a state income tax..it will get lowered over the years till everybody in state pays..dont trust them, and dont trust them when they say a law is going to be a secondary offence because its just the start before they change it..with cell phones it is a good change and should have been a primary from the start but weak willed politicians didn't want to risk getting people mad by making them stop using their phones while driving..so they made it a secondary till people get used to the idea.

If the state was serious about stopping this then why not do it! I dont understand what the problem is. Almost all phones have GPS so if the person is moving over a certian speed then the phone will not work with the exception of 911 or if bluetooth is turned on. Simple! Like I said in my other post seems like they just see dollar signs.

So does the state realy want to educate or stop driving while texting? I think it's so stupid anyway. Why would you want to type hello when you could dial and say it in person. Are we moving towards being mute or what. Makes a good Sci Fi movie about a race of people who stopped talking and they all went mute and started texting. HEY! cool, we are borg we will assimilate you. Hey listen a money making venture for the state collecting revenue off peoples lives just like serving alcohol on the weekends at a bar but not in the stores. You can buy it at the bar and drive home and get a dui and kill someone and face over 5k in fines or life in prison, just like you can still use your phones but we will collect over $100.00 if you do. Listen I'm not saying we dont have choices, I choose not to pick that phone up, I choose to answere it or I will do what I want attitude.

I know many people that have died from this reason, so I think you are wrong. It is too bad cell phones were just never invented, life was fine before them.

Sad that these people lost their daughter, but anyone who thinks this is the reason for the change is not paying attention, When the original cell phone law was passed as a secondary offense everybody knew it was only a matter of time until the state would make it a primary offense there were news stories about it they talked about it on the radio ect..also I've been to those classes where they drag a mangled car out to show it to people to shock them into seeing the light...it dosn't work, people see it and think wow thats bad and then will continue to do whatever they have done in the past and that has been shown time and time again. stop with the feel good we did something and really do something..make it to where if talking/texting while driving you are arrested same as drunk driving..car goes to impound you go to jail and have several thousand dollars in court costs and fines. even then some people will still do it but at least when you get them it will hurt

About time they made this sort of thing illegal...it seriously annoys me to see people driving while on their phones. Whenver I have to answer my phone or make a call while in the car, I will actually pull my car over in a parking lot. I find that even while using a hand's free device, simply carrying a conversation while driving still distracts me. I evidently am not the best at multi tasking and I'm sure the same could be said about many other people.

Wow. I feel so badly for these parents. But I am thrilled they are campaigning to try and educate the foolish. Not only can you lose your own life driving and texting, but you can rob others of their lives as well.
