McKENNA, Wash. - Gas thieves are repeatedly targeting one car dealership in rural Pierce County. The crimes have gotten so bad, the owner says gas is stolen from his cars almost every night of the week.

Almost every day at Baydo Chevrolet in McKenna, the staff finds a gas cap open on a car, or a hole punched in a gas tank. The gas has been stolen.

The thieves don't just take gas. They have stolen nine cars, a backhoe, and a 20-foot cargo trailer. They've broken into a storage shed twice to steal detailing equipment.

When the equipment was moved to a more secured storage unit, they broke into that too.

"We've lost well over $200,000 in merchandise and equipment," said Walt Baydo, owner of the dealership.

The situation got so bad that an employee started sleeping in a trailer on the property. But the thieves just stole the gas from the trailer, too, while the employee was inside.

Surveillance cameras don't seem to discourage the suspects.

In this rural part of the county, Pierce County deputies can only patrol so often. Budget cuts forced the department to trim 15 positions in the last 6 months.

"It's not just us either. It's the community in general. Roy, McKenna, Yelm," said Baydo.

Baydo Chevrolet will host a town hall meeting Tuesday night with law enforcement and lawmakers. Residents and business owners hope with some group brainstorming, they'll find a solution. The town hall meeting will be Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

If they were using the gas to burn dogs alive in Tacoma that constantly bark for 10 hours a day, I would be happy to donate $1,000 to their cause. They could leave 25,000 burnt carcasses in front of city hall.

Do come ..... Our local paper says the meeting is at Baydo's, the car dealership near the McKenna stop light. My stolen car was recovered just down the road from there in a wooded area with a hole in the tank. We have lived here 25 years and no problem while we had a big black dog, but the last five years, my home was vandalized in day hours plus six others were reported in Yelm area the same day. The only thing ever found was empty jewelery boxes and some papers along Mountain highway. First I noticed more people were building border fences and installing exterior lights. Some people even use locked gates or pay for monitored home security. Yes, they are bold and take things they can use, trade or sell for money or drugs. It's highly probable our items will never be located. The Thurston County Sheriff's 911 calls yesterday were 214 in 24 hours

Have they questioned the guy who was staying in the trailer? What a perfect setup.

Sitting ontop of the water tower with a 30-06 will discourage the thiefs, A couple rounds thru them and no more issues.

wow ! wheres the police in that town ? but oly is no better the oly U-Haul gets gas stolen everynight also!! holes drilled in gas tanks, filler hoses cut, catalytic converters cut off thanks to battery operated saws, and the oly cops are sitting at the doughnut shop!! and they are in such a hurry to get to the doughnut shop that a convoy of them ran a red light in front of me at 6 a.m. one morning to get to those doughnuts and when i flashed my lights at them they just turned on their red and blues for a second to let me know they are above the LAW !!!
