Sea-Tac getting full-body scanners

Sea-Tac getting full-body scanners

Credit: AP

In this photo taken Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, an employee of Schiphol stands inside a body scanner during a demonstration at a press briefing at Schiphol airport, Netherlands. On display the highlighted area shows an alert on possible forbidden items. The newest models do not show the gender of the passenger, but you can see if someone carries liquids, weapons or other objects.

SEATTLE - Officials at Sea-Tac International Airport say the facility will be installing full-body scanners sometime this year.

KING 5 News has learned the number is still unclear but could be as few as five machines.

Nineteen other U.S. airports are now using the controversial full-body scanners -- which can "see" through clothing -- but only six of those airports are using the scanners as a primary screening method. The others, according to the Transportation Security Administration, are using the scanners as secondary screening, meaning that if someone arouses suspicion or screeners want to take a closer look the person sent to the full-body scanner.

At this point, it is unclear how Sea-Tac will be using the scanners.

In December, just after the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner, CNN reported that 150 new full-body scanning machines are set to be placed in airports across the United States as federal authorities work to close security loopholes exposed by the failed attempt.

Today, the TSA announced it is purchasing 300 units, at a cost of some $170,000, apiece by 2010.

There are two types of full body scanners. One uses so-called "backscatter" technology to produce an x-ray image of a person.  The other uses millimeter-wave technology, which shows a detailed photo negative.

Use of the scanning technology has been described as being overly invasive by critics.

The suspect in the attempted attack, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, boarded Northwest flight 253 in Amsterdam but did not go through a full-body scanner.

Fearing a rift with the United States, the European Union said Thursday it may force resistant member states to use the full-body scanners being pushed by the Obama administration.

Britain, the Netherlands and Italy already have joined Washington in announcing plans to install more of the devices. But there are deep divisions among European nations, with countries such as Spain and Germany calling the scanners intrusive and a potential health risk.

CNN and Associated Press contributed to this report.

This is this administrations way of covering up perversion. Sure, as you enter the body scan you hand over your ID and boarding pass. In the scanner you become a number that shows up on the image somewhere down the hallway in some room on a monitor. The TSA agent holding your ID and boarding pass with your name on it sends some kind of electronic signal to the agent on the monitor to take a picture. Image with name then end up on You Tube or in some gov't file. Even TSA could figure this out somewhere down the line. Actually " big brother" (gov't) has probably already spied on you in some form, this just lets them do it more openly. " Hey mogvet" the cavity searches are not far off and now will happen in some cases to women if they fly a certain time of the month unless they fly with no visible strings attached. I know this must sound crude, but true. Hmmmm, would that fall under profiling???

People intent on doing harm will always be a step ahead. Their desire motivates them to look for the loopholes that will allow them to carry out their evil intentions. Those of us who do not seek to harm others don't spend our hours in such "creativity" and even those who protect us don't have that mind for evil. Instead we suffer "for safety" (which can never be truly attained) while the bad guys are planning their next step. Death is tragic- but it is a universal given. There is no "saving even one" merely a putting off today what will happen in some tomorrow. Putting millions through misery and inconvenience saves no one- it just means we have that much less time to enjoy the good parts of life while we drag out the parts that suck.

My question is does it expose us to radiation? I get sick of being exposed to this. Its bad enough every time I move and switch dentists I have to get 10 x-rays because they won't have them forwarded over and they won't touch you without looking at x-rays first. It all adds up.

People who work for TSA are to dumb to know how to use them, I would trust TSA to find anything.

ArcticFireGuy you have to understand that there will not be an opportunity to do body cavity scans because it will be too late. I guarantee you this will be their method of choice and they are likely preparing for a March/April assault after we have been lulled back into the warmth of our national security blanket believing body scanners will solved this problem. You are going to wake up one morning and discovery 50 to 100 planes have exploded on the final approach over a major metropolian area (LA, San Diego, New York). This will significantly increase the amount of death and destruction. An we will wonder, how did they get the explosives on the plane, we have body scanners. Body scanners will NOT detect explosives in your intestines, body cavity or mouth. Then ask yourself will Muslim women and children be scanned in their native countries before entering the US. I don't think so. Once again we are building a house of cards fighting the current battle with last years tactics.

What about birth defects caused by scanning unborn babies? Or the health risks when the back scatter unravels DNA? And the cancer risk of frequent fliers being repeatedly scanned? Fluoroscopes were common in shoe stores to fit shoes in the 1940's / 1950's and were stopped once they realized they posed health risks. I guess people think obamacare will pay for their health problems so who cares if they get cancer or other health problems due to the full body scans???

To understand how al-Qaida will execute its next assault, examine current security flaws within air transportation security. First, restrooms are unobservable and unmonitored, providing few restrictions to impede assembling and preparing an explosive device. Likely key components will be divided among several passengers to avoid detection. That leaves the explosive, say Semtex, a plastic explosive. Look how the drug cartel has for years smuggled cocaine using “mules” who swallow large amounts of cocaine in latex condoms. The current body scans only detect what is under the clothing. Scanners are useless outdated technology.

People who use the argument "if you have nothing to hide" really should try to think...going by that logic then police shouldnt need a search warrant to enter and search your house/car ect. because if you have nothing to hide then whats the problem, they should just be able to enter anytime they want and look around ..this is just part of the downhill slide of rights in America that has been going on for a long time..and as for "if it saves even one life" well if we had police on every corner and you were required to have travel permits to go anywhere that could save lives also, but we dont want that in America do we?

We need these machines to protect us from people who would do us harm and to do it safely. BUT, what about the safety of those people exposed to the rays? Especially pregnant women and small children, and people who fly frequently? Do these machines meet some standard so that air passengers aren't over exposed to radiation? What about the people whose job it is to operate these machines everyday? And what about maintance, calibration and inspection to insure they work properly? After all, the techs dash behind a barrier when you get a chest x-ray at the doctors clinic and they cover you with a lead apron at the dentists office BECAUSE X-RAYS CAN BE HARMFUL. Just how much radiation will I be exposed to on my next trip through the airport?

I don't know why anyone would object to this....law enforcement is not allowed to look at specific criminals because it might hurt their feelings. So they have to screen everyone. I actually feel sorry for the TSA employees that have to look at the monitor and see all the overweight fat nasty people. The one in a thousand that has a decent body is a reward. If you aren't hiding anything than who cares. I am so tired of the criminals and ACLU attorneys jeopardising my safety.

This is a really terrible not to mention useless idea. If 9/11 has taught us anything it's that there are no bombs - at least not functioning ones. Four planes hijacked, not one bomb or object forbidden at the time for airplane travel. I'm guessing there'll be far more people who suffer adverse health effects as a result of these full body x-rays than people who's lives are saved so some double digit IQ security worker can get paid to watch a creepy peep show.

Alll these people on here crying how this is an invasion of privacy blaa blaa blaa, will be the first to cry foul and something more should have been done if another 9-11 is pulled off. @ sumner_son... so far there have been no MAJOR terrorist attacks on other forms of transportation, rest assured though once they start blowing up subway trains the same security will be put into place. I can believe people are so against this. Whats the big deal? Like I said before, drive if you dont want to be scaned.

Let's see how many people have attacked the US while already living in the US of A?? I think those that over took air planes were already in the US when they pulled off what we now call 9-11. We had an Army Dr. went on a shooting spree down in TX. How many other times have we had people already living in the US try to cause mass damage like Columbine, Co. We can't stop all the radicals that want to cause death & devastation. We can do our best to protect since less deaths. I wouldn't mind going through a body scanner,. You ask WHY NOT? I have NOTHING to HIDE. IF you have nothing to hide then whats your problem??? Walk or drive yourself. I think they still makes ships you can buy or rent for your foreign country vacations so you won't have to get a body scan. I don't fly because I am considered a third world person, I smoke. So if I want to go some where I drive.

@arcticfireguy - I was just going to post that Franklin quote. Apparently we need to distribute that one more widely. Seems like most of the country is content to do just the opposite. @bikejumpr9 - I totally agree. It's time that Americans took responsibility for our own safety, as did those on that plane, instead of hiding like frightened children behind the skirt of the federal government. The only person in the world who can keep you safe is you. We'd do well to act like it.

I agree with sp2009, America being free is just for our forefathers and liberals who actually believe in protecting the US Constitution. George W is a wise man to show how the patriot act and color-coded alert levels can China-fy our US Constitution for a TRUE 'safe' and 'free' America. Let me just add where they left off by suggesting we don't allow civilians to fly at all and to make everyone safe, to place everyone in zones. This way our government can track where everyone goes and keep us safe from everyone else who is out to get us...

I don't like the scanners any more than the next guy but if all 300 of us getting on the plane have to do it then so be it. Better that then my family getting a phone call. I would rather get scanned than not.

When one of these terrorist hides a volatile substance in his rectum should we all then be subject to body cavity searches? Another example of closing the gate after the horses are gone. One guy tries to blow up his shoes and now we all have to take ours off. This guy stuffs his briefs and now we all have to be body scanned. We not take a clue from the Israelis and profile terrorist? When is the last time someone tried something on an El Al flight? You never hear of it, why? They profile terrorist...(seems the most common offenders just happen to be radical male Muslims, duh') But we won't profile. We would rather waste millions and inconvenience everyone then offend any individual or group. What has happened to reasoned thinking? This Country is going in the crapper because of political correctness.

There is no reason for these scanners. This whole thing is coming from the December attack attempt in which the man flew into the country from out of the country. What good will these scanners do at protecting us FROM PEOPLE COMING IN TO THE COUNTRY!!!! Saving your life - Pretty sure it was the passengers on the plane that saved everyone, not the full-body scanner that the man DID NOT have to walk through....
