Flying ice on freeways the latest road worry

Lexx Collier thought he had dodged the worst of the winter driving as he made his way down I-5 to work this morning. Then, out of nowhere, he got hit.

"It was a loud pop," he says.

Collier got nailed with a big chunk of ice that came flying off the car in front of him, cracking his windshield. He tweeted KING 5 today, to warn others about the danger.

"My choices were either try to avoid it or let it hit," he said. "Since the road was so slippery I decided just to bear the brunt of the ice."

Flying sheets of ice have been a problem all across the area, with many people simply not thinking about the those in their rearview mirrors.

"I tried to catch up with them to alert them that there was still ice flying off their car, and at thay point they were gone," said Collier.

The Washington State Patrol says it is not against the law to drive with a big pile of ice on your roof. However, if your car does cause a cracked windshield or an accident, and someone gets your license plate number, your insurance could be held liable.

Smashed windshields are just part of the problems drivers are dealing with in the storm's aftermath. A half dozen cars and counting are stacked up at Premeire Auto Body in Tukwila. They are typically besieged with bent bumpers and crunched quarter panels after a big snow, but this storm is different.

Pete Rahiman says they're seeing more totalled cars than a typical storm. He blames the ice that often sneaks up on drivers and causes crashes at higher speeds.

"I've seen the 4x4's on the freeways that think they own the street, but they don't. If you make a mistake you flip over," he said.

@gladimoved..As far as the smart alec sport car drivers, I'm with you..However, it still doesn't justify reckless driving by these 4x4 drivers...Yes, many of the drivers have a false sense of security as well as I'm bigger than you so clear the way..Not to forget to mention, the one's I encounter have drivers (usually woman who can barely see over the steering wheel) chatting away on their cell phones..

Really... so drivers should be aware of something is regularly instructed as part of drivers ed? I am so tired of the news reporting such non-events and trying to create news.

Is it a false sense of security or just plain huge ego that gets the 4X4's in trouble? Maybe that enormous ego gives them a false sense of security.

Basically it's a matter of being just a little considerate of others safety and property to take a few minutes to clear the car top and windows. I watched in my rear fiew mirror today as a sheet of ice the size of a card table blow off a mini van, hopefully it didn't hit anyone. Selfishness rules these days.

People in 4X4's think they are invincible because of what they drive. I have seen more idiot 4X4 drivers in the ditch, on their tops, or bashed into someone than non. People sure do get a false sense of security driving those things, and they find out real quick the hard way. I just laugh at them myself... If you want to drive.. Learn how to drive first.

I took the time this morning to clean off the compacted snow/ice all over my car so that it would not fly off and hit someone windshield going down the highway this morning. I saw a few people that were ahead of me with compact snow/ice just blowing all over. This could have caused a huge accident. This would be avoidable if people would just take the time and clean it off the car!

dakotanative--Debris can also fly and hit you from a distance or a car that is just ahead of you in the next lane. So calm on the anger :)

Back off you fricken idiots. The highway was slippery, so I couldn't avoid it. Maybe because you were too close for conditions. Reminds me of a driver who was drinking and got hit by debris from a truck. Too drink to react, back off or get off the road.
