SEATTLE – Firefighters rescued a mother and a child trapped by an apartment fire early Monday.
The fire in the four-story building on W. Galer on Queen Anne Hill was reported at about 3:45 a.m.
The fire was started by candles left unattended, fire officials said
Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore says they were left burning on top of a refrigerator, and flames caught the kitchen on fire and destroyed one unit.
Resident Lisa Kerechek said she woke up when someone pounded on her door.
"I got up, got dressed and ran out the front door," she said.
Kerechek said she helped another resident get out of the building.
"She was on the second floor and she was trying to go out the front door but the smoke was too thick so she came out her window and I caught her dog when she let the dog down," she said.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock the fire down in a first-floor unit.
“We searched the whole building making sure no one else was trapped; no one else was trapped,” said Seattle Fire spokesman Kyle Moore.
No one was hurt.
A Metro bus was brought in so about three dozen residents of the building would have a place to stay warm until they were allowed back in the building.
