SEATTLE -- Some say they are an eyesore, while others find all the vacant lots around Seattle just plain depressing.

There are between 30 and 50 vacant lots around downtown Seattle and Ballard. They are spots where old buildings were torn down, but when the economy turned sour, plans for new construction were put on hold indefinitely.

Now those lots feature large holes, piles of dirt, graffiti or rusting fences.

"They're really not good for the city. They're not safe and they're not very attractive, certainly," said Mary Johnston, an architect on Seattle's Design Commission.

In addition, some of the vacant lots are in prominent locations, such as the one across the street from Seattle's City Hall. Others were once the home of sentimental favorites, like the former Sunset Bowl or the old "Googi-esque" Denny's, both in Ballard. There were once plans to build glistening new condominiums in their places, but that construction is now on hold until the economy perks up again.

"We're all hoping it picks up pretty soon," said Johnston. "But in the meantime, we'd like to do something fun with some of these lots."

The Seattle Design Commission is now scouting for ideas to fill some of the spots. They are holding a competition to find creative and inexpensive ways to turn these eyesores into something more appealing.

"We've been getting wonderful ideas," said Johnston. "Everything from really passive garden ideas or maybe planting fields of sunflowers to attract birds and butterflies, to really active, fun ideas like miniature golf or one of my favorites is a community dance floor."

The deadline for those ideas is May 24th. The Commission is in the process of talking with property owners to see who would be interested in participating in the program, and they hope to implement the ideas is as many as five lots.

To check out the Design Commission's web page and submit your idea, go to http://www.seattle.gov/dpd/planning/design_commission/overview.

Build some inexpensive box gardens and allow the public to grow vegetables.

The owners of these properties want to generate income while the projects are on hold until the economy gets better. Turn as many as you can into parking lots, monthly parking space, jump off lots to metro bus stops downtown to save commutes and generate more money for metro. There are many local parking companies that would jump at the chance even temporarily.

gallows is a good idea for the criminals - as soon as they are convicted, hang them - especially if they start with the elected officials

Put in a few porta potties and give a somewhat permanent home to Tent City. At least until the developers have the $$ to develop the property, people wouldn't have to be moving ever 3-6 months. There would have to be some (GASP) rules and self(?) governance so it doesn't turn into a drunken flop or constant pot party. But, most the people at Tent City say they are law abiding citizens down on their luck, so they probably wouldn't be adverse to some rules and governance.

This is private property and the city wants to change things up a bit in the hopes of not looking like an eye sore. That's laughable! I'd pave the lot over and make a new parking lot before I let the city do something with my land! Because after they get their foot in the door, good luck getting it back when you're ready to build your project.

We took a vote in a local restaurant & using the lot nearest the courthouse, the recommendation was for a 4-man gallows for public hangings. 7 out of 10 voted for hangings and the other 3 said that was too good. Public hangings might reduce the crime wave that is rising. Make sure there is lots of media attention.

I think most people in Ballard would have been quite happy to have the Denny's and Sunset Bowl back. Why were these greedy developers so eager to turn down perfectly functioning businesses? We don't need more condos in Ballard!!

Open the space to crop sharing, people will pay a monthly fee to rent space for gardens. they would be responsilbe for their own supplies as well. It is a win win situation. It has work an other areas why not Seattle. Most of these corp share space are also very beautiful!

This is what should happen, but never will in a million years: All the top executives of the companies that started these projects with visions of even more money lining their pockets, should be handed a shovel and made to fill in the holes. Or second best, they should be made to pay the costs of the work to fill the holes and make them decent looking. Sticking the taxpayer with any costs for this is more than unethical, it should be criminal! The recession and the economic crisis didn't happen overnight. These construction projects were started with no thought given to an economy that almost collapsed.

If they won't put in parking, I don't see why a community garden couldn't go in there. It could teach people to get along with each other long enough ... at least until harvest.

Gee - ya think temporary use they would even consider PARKING LOTS to attract more people to downtown events? I thought not - after all, they need to keep the people OUT of seattle and keep their money at southcenter so they can cry to the fools in olympia they need a bailout because of loss of tax revenue. Knowing seattle elected officials, they will want to build a TEMPORARY 50 story skyscraper so they can "put people to work" building it - of course they will tear it down and build something new when the economy improves (which will never happen - obama has killed it - just gasping its last breath now)

@jackwong. What kool-aid do you drink? This states politicians are out of control on tax issues. Recessions are the last time to raise taxes. The people will speak their minds this November and I'm betting a lot of incumbents from both sides of the fence will be out of a job.

@stryker: When you lower taxes, it will create less revenue. BAD IDEA. We need to raise taxes on current businesses and use the extra funding to start a commission to do a study on what the market wants in that business and do contract zoning on those lands accordingly.

Lower Taxes and try to attract businesses. Are these privately owned lots or city owned?
