ARLINGTON, Wash. – Herb Swift survived a massive heart attack and he has his coworkers to thank for it – twice.

"They say I was dead for a half-hour," said Swift from his hospital bed. "Who dies for a half-hour without brain damage? I had no warning, I just passed out, my head fell forward. And the next thing I remember, I'm waking up in the hospital at two in the morning."

"He was just slumped over in his seat. Head down. Real labored breathing," said Scott Justesen, Swift's co-worker.

Last July Swift was operating an excavator at a landscaping project at Marysville Getchell High School when he suffered the heart attack. Justesen, the foreman for Pacific Earthworks, says there was no time to panic.

"When 911 says start CPR, you just start it and do it. You don't think about it too much," said Justesen.

Justesen and EllRoy Oster, the site's superintendent, pumped Swift's chest for ten minutes until medics arrived. Both men were trained on the job in CPR.

"The instructor says you'll probably not have to use it but it's good to know it," said Oster. "Fortunately, we know it and had a chance to use it to save his life."

Usually, saving someone's life is a once in a lifetime opportunity. But in this case, the opportunity came knocking last week when it happened again. Swift was back on the job and in the excavator when he had another heart attack.

"Exact same style head down and I thought 'Oh no. This can't happen twice,'" said Oster.

"Especially same guy, same area. The odds of that happening are one-in-a-million," said Justesen.

Once again, Swift's co-workers save his life.

"I love 'em all," said Swift.

He says everyone should learn CPR. But this 52-year-old double heart attack survivor had this advice as well.

"Enjoy life, help as many people as you can, be thankful," said Swift.

Swift would also like to thank the staff at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. He could be released from the hospital as early as Tuesday.

I am glad he is safe..BUT , WHY was he back at work so soon after the first? I thought you were supposed to take care of yourself after that kind of health problem. Let me guess, his boss would have fired him if he did not return immediately.....

@tootoo acknowledged. But giving credit to God doesn't diminish the role that rescuers played. My faith includes a belief that God does much of his good works through people. Therefore, if I learn CPR, I can help carry out His will by saving a life when needed. In that case the giver and receiver are edified together. If he wants to call them home CPR isn't going to do the trick. Don't let me keep you from sailing and mountain climbing. If the boat starts to sink feel free to pray.

Looks like a bleak way to live, stay at work and live or go home and die.Keep a bottle of Scope in your pockets and wish for the best.

Nobody wants to die, especially 3 times! When I check out, I don't want to be resuscitated only to die again at later time... Just let me be!

@bazwest: My initial problem is with people attributing cases like this first to god's intervention and not to the amazing people who go out of their way to save people's lives and the many advances in technology that allowed people like this to live on with their lives. Had this happened 50 years ago, no god could have saved this man. And again, I will politely decline god in my life. If there's room in my life, personally I would rather take up fulfilling and rewarding things such as sailing or mountain climbing. Those to me are what are truly awe-inspiring. But again, different people find fulfillment in different things, doesn't make them wrong or right, just makes them who they are.

tootoo, you are absolutely right, you are free to believe whatever you choose. And you are certainly free to base your lack of faith on the old "since I can't see it it doesn't exist argument" if you want. I don't pretend that I can convince you otherwise. But using the same reasoning I suppose one could also argue that atomic particles don't exist , or air, or black holes. But we do see evidence of these things if we look for it. At the same time it is pretty easy to miss the evidence if one's basic theory is that these things don't exist. As for me, I see evidence of God everywhere and I regularly feel his influence in my life. On another note, I am sorry that it bothers you enough when others express their faith that you seem to feel the need to express your contrarian view. By the way, there is always room for God in your life, if you allow Him in. He doesn't crowd out the other things you hold dear he improves them.

Prove it? I haven't seen or experienced anything that I would consider a "god." Yet, my life is one of the happiest and most successful anyone could ask for. The only people I have to thank are me, for striving hard and family/friends who supported me. No room for "god" in that equation. But anyone else is free to believe in and worship whatever they want, it's in the constitution.

No god, but the goodness of other people and advancements in modern science.

Wow, if I were this guy I would start trying to figure out what extra purpose God had for me to do on before I finally keel over for good.

Learn CPR!!! My wife works for the YMCA and has to take yearly training. She saved a little boys life that was choking at a restaurant. Blew us all away. Pretty cool when the "First Responders" are your friends and family.
