FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Federal Way Police have arrested a woman for allegedly pouring laundry detergent on an infant she was babysitting.

The babysitter, identified in court papers as Mabinty Williams, was babysitting a four-week-old baby for a family friend at an Federal Way apartment complex on January 10.

A neighbor said Williams knocked on her door around noon and told her a story about an "evil" baby.

"She just knocked on our door, told us there was a random baby in her house and she didn't know where it came from," said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified. "And so we called the cops, and then she said it looked evil."

"She asked if we wanted to come see it, but we just said no and shut the door," added the neighbor.

Instead, they immediately called police. When officers arrived, they found a four-week-old baby with a pile of white powder dumped on its face.

"Instead of reaching out and getting some help, she used chemicals and salt and things like that to pour on the baby," said Cathy Schrock with Federal Way Police.

In court documents filed in King County Superior Court, Federal Way Police say Williams put laundry booster on the baby. The infant could be heard gasping for air as officers wiped away the white powder.

"We are just really happy the neighbor took the initiative to call 911 and get us there as quickly as possible," said Schrock. "I think early intervention with the child is what saved her."

The baby was rushed to the hospital. A doctor reported the infant suffered apparent chemical burns to the mouth and eyes. As of Thursday, the infant's condition was improving.

"Everything looks like it will heal and not have lasting damage," said Schrock.

According to court documents, the baby had only been in Williams' care for about four hours before police arrived. During that time period, she reportedly called her husband 16 times, telling him she needed his help. He did come home at one point, fed the baby and returned to work. A short time later, the police were called and the baby was found in bad condition.

Williams has denied wrongdoing. She is currently in police custody and is due in court later this month.

Sad, but the woman obviously needs mental help, not jail time. Her calling her husband 16 times shows that she was trying to get help.

@Austin74 - now days, you don't want to get involved in anything. Not only could you be getting yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.. you don't know that the lady wasn't going to kill you. Also, the cops could assume you were involved because you came in there to see the "evil baby". Cops can twist whatever they'd like. It's better to just stay out of it, and call the police. Just like they did! Kudos to their fast acting! Glad to hear the baby is OK and she is in custody! Where she Belongs!

Assault of a child? Shouldn't it be attempted murder?

glad the neighbor did the right thing and the baby will be ok. you gotta wonder about the mothers stability for leaving the child with someone like this woman. they are lucky it didn't get into the lungs. this is the first time i've seen k5 list a legal doc like they did, and while i know it's a matter of public record when filed i'm a little shocked they clearly show the address of the offender. (if it was my child she should hope they lock her up before my hands were around her throat)

What a sad story. That poor baby! I hope she heals & recovers quickly. Another thing of concern here, as if chemical burns to that baby's mouth/eyes/face wasn't enough - where was location of the torn frenulum? I'm going to assume (and hope) that it was the frenulum in the baby's mouth. I certainly hope it wasn't in her genitals.

@Austin74 - would YOU follow a stranger who knocked on your door to see an "evil baby"? And calling the police did help the baby.

No wonder the neighbors didn't want their name in the paper, they didn't provide help to a helpless baby. Props for calling the police but good lord. What would the penalty if the baby would have died while the police were on the way? I am discussed.

Her family friend had to of known she was mentally-ill. Why would you leave a helpless infant with a mentally-ill person?

REALLY!?! That's one messed up person in the head. Did you really think blessing Tide and dousing the baby would wipe the evil clean? You have to use Clorox Bleach, everybody knows that.

On the one hand, I think doing this is wrong. But if this has something to do with a religious ritual, we might have to look into it more.

She needs mental help. People with mental problems don't think right. She was probably trying to help the baby in some sick way. She was asking for help, and just her knowing enough to continually ask for help shows she didn't want to hurt the baby. The husband should know better to not leave a baby with a mentally incapable person. She is truly mentally sick and the baby is lucky to be alive.. people don't leave your babies with mentally ill caretakers.
