SEATTLE -- Two men are learning a valuable lesson: don't drink and kayak.

Seattle police believe alcohol was a factor after the two men, 36 and 28, attempted to kayak from Bainbridge Island to Seattle in the middle of the night Thursday and capsized in the Puget Sound waters.

A 911 call was received around 2:00 a.m. from the girlfriend of one of the kayakers. She had gotten a call from her boyfriend's friend, who used his cell from from the middle of Puget Sound to tell her they were in trouble. Police say the 36-year-old reported his companion had flipped over and was clinging to the kayak's hull.

Once they received the call, the Coast Guard and Fire Department scrambled to find the pair. They found them bobbing about two miles from Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood and pulled them aboard a fire boat.

"Luckily we had people on shore with binoculars scanning the water and we were able to locate two what appeared to be flashing lights that were going up and down with the waves," said Batt. Chief Alan Cox, Seattle Fire Dept. "We sent one of the boats over to investigate and they were identified as the two kayakers."

Police say the two men had apparently been watching the Texas-Alabama game on TV and having some beer. During the game around 8 p.m., they decided to go for a trip in the kayaks. They apparently started from the Bermerton side of the sound.

Officers said when they pulled them from the water, they could smell a very strong odor of beer on the two. The two men were wearing street clothing and personal flotation devices, but no wet suits.

The two men had been in the water for nearly an hour. One was able to walk ashore and was sent home. Officers said the other was very cold and could barely speak coherently. He was taken by stretcher to Harborview Medical Center and treated for hypothermia. He is in satisfactory condition and is expected to completely recover.

"With air and water temperatures in the 40s, rescuers say it's fortunate the two men escaped with just a trip to the hospital," said Cox.

KING 5's Jennifer Cabala and Deborah Feldman contributed to this report.

The police should charge them the cost of the rescue, and give them some public service time!

Some say bill them and I might agree but who else should we bill for rescues?

now you said it, lol! growler said on January 8, 2010 at 8:46 AM I believe in Darwin's natural selection process. Rescuing these idiots interferes with that process. I also believe that rescuing people like these or some other fool that tries to climb a major NW peak in the winter should pay the bill. It's our bucks that fund this stuff.

organdonor, speaking as someone who has lost a loved one in a car accident (not his fault) you are indeed an idiot. These people CHOSE to make some very bad judgements and endangered their lives as well as the lives of their rescuers. They should pay the financial costs.

It's really tricky trying to pee from all that beer when you're in middle of the water. Trust me, i've been there. One abrupt disruption in the balance of the kayak & it will flip over in an instant. Standing up will do that. Think of another way to pee, i did & it worked.

Hey organdonor, you are an idiot in the words true meaning! Nobody wanted them to die, just for them to pay for their stupidity! And in case you don't know, people who screws up in cars are paying for it with fines, jail time or whatever they get for their mistakes.

I personally doubt it was smuggling as well, but I think the point wasn't that they were trying to transport the drugs "across" the sound, but perhaps that they'd gone out to get it from a ship that had come into the sound. A waterborne hand-off. Again, though, it's sound like this was just a couple drunk guys with atrocious judgment. Just glad no one got killed. Good job by the fire department!

I disagree with the smuggling theory. It would be way easier to drive around -- one car out of a million is way less suspicious than two kayaks at night. It was pure drunken stupidity, in my opinion. They must have had several guardian angels watching over them to have survived that stunt.

Bill them, but otherwise keep the judgments to yourself: one day when you get in a jam, stupid or not, and you are rescued, you'll probably whine about paying the price....oh well.....all stupid humans don't end up in kayaks, drunk at night, in the winter in street clothes....some of them are just sitting around on their backsides hoping someone dumber than they are gets in the news so they'll have something to feel superior about for another 15 minutes....

One hour out there is the ballpark figure for death to come knocking. I'm not a big fan of billing for rescues, except in cases like these.

Er.... maybe we should find out what happened first? I suspect that they were more than just yahoos with boats. If they survived in Puget Sound for an hour I'm guessing they had dry suits, if somebody on shore saw flashing lights then they had locater lights, if a call was made when they were in the water then they had dry bags. The big question is why they couldn't do a self rescue and how both of them ended up in the water. Paddling from Bainbridge to Seattle isn't that big a deal and even in daylight you are looking for cross traffic and not assuming that ANY ship is going to see you. At night you are looking for traffic and not assuming that ANY ship is going to see you. Life is more than sitting on a couch.

These morons are not kayakers, just a couple of braindeads that happen to own kayaks. The rest of the boating public views kayakers with disdain, incidents like this only make it worse for the rest of us.

I am thinking smuggling of some kind. Raining, middle of the night, January, paddling accross Shipping lanes. Back in my twenties, I could see myself taking that bet after a few cases of beer, sitting around a beach fire in July, and wanting to impress some pretty girls. Police may want to investigate further.

Yeah growler. They should also let people in car accidents die also. Why should I have to pay for that service. I have not been in an accident. I mean only stupid people wreck cars. They should have to pay the bill also. Really if your so uptight about spending less than a cent to save a life you got some serious problems because that is about all it cost us. Less than 1 penny per taxpayer to make this rescue happen.

They need to take a class in kayaking, sounds like they could learn a LOT. It is dangerous going out in the night even for experienced kayakers. The sound is not a place to take lightly, the waters are always cold and they are very very lucky...................................... This is a skill that takes training, not just a jump in the boat and lets go..attitude..................Glad they are ok
