Police are still searching for a gunman who shot two people, killing the female driver, in a drive-by shooting in Tacoma.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Portland Avenue East and East 56th Street.

Camille Love, 20, and her brother had left a family gathering when a man in a white Chrysler minivan pulled up next to them and shot them.  Camille was killed; her brother was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Tacoma police say the shooting appears random. There was no confrontation or words exchanged. Police believe it might have been a bizarre road rage incident. The only motive they can find is perhaps the shooter didn't like the way the young woman was driving, so he killed her.

Helene Bell, Camille's aunt, says the whole family is in shock.

"Right now we're trying to pick up the pieces," she said. "We're mourning. This is going to be a long ride for us."

Bell says Camille was a young woman with a bright future.

"She was a young, vibrant 21-year-old. She was getting ready to go to college," said Bell. "Actually, today was the day she was getting ready to sign up for college. It's kind of hard right now - she was a good kid."

Camille's brother is recovering in the hospital as police try to make sense of a tragedy that appears to have been unprovoked.

"The only thing that may have led up to this is a minor traffic incident that should never have led up to this point," said Mark Fulghum, Tacoma Police Dept.

"I would like to say to the person who did this for them to turn themselves in and know they took an innocent life and shouldn't be on the streets," said Bell.

Police still haven't found the shooter. There were few witnesses, and the only description police have of the suspect is that he was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt.

The van was found abandoned and running about a mile from the scene. Police say it was reported stolen out of Auburn.

Police are very concerned the gunman has not yet been caught.  They say if you saw any suspicious activity near East 56th Street and Portland Avenue East in Tacoma, please give them a call.

mabey it wasnt random mabey it was, the first thing that poped into my head after reading the story is "gang initiation". i know that is one thing the gangs do over here on the east side of the state. i dont know much about that area but its just my thoughts on it.

How sad, road rage, what has gotten into some of these senseless crimes. Here we are again, family visiting Tacoma and this horrific crime occurs. Prayers to mom, brother, aunt, grandfather and the rest of the family, driving down the road and to get shot, time for much tougher gun laws NOW. Hope they got some prints out of the van and these ruthless killers will not turn themselves in, and wish a instant $10,000 reward was offered, my neighbor offered a few years back $5000 for his missing dog.

Its amazing you would think it couldnt be a random shooting. I wonder what the 4 Lakewood Officers would say about random shootings.

No worries.... with the new case law out there, passed down by the Washington Supreme Court, police are not allowed to search vehicles under any circumstance, except getting a warrant. Well, we all know that our precious judges aren't out at 2am. As a result, and I hope I am wrong, we are about to see crime rates skyrocket in Washington. Once the criminals elsewhere find out how easy our home grown criminals have it, Washington will be a huge magnet for felons.

Listen, idiots. There are plenty of areas in Seattle, Portland and central Washington that are far worse than anything you will now find in Tacoma. No, this is not the best area in town, but it is certainly not the worst. And Portland Ave. is a major arterial that connects Parkland and areas in-between with I-5, so a lot of people drive it just to get back and forth from the freeway. And you morons who think you know this case inside and out without knowing anything other than what you read in the paper -- if you're such investigative geniuses, why don't you go join the police and help solve crimes like this one? I'll tell you why -- you're either too stupid, too fat, too lazy or some combination of the three to ever get on the force and actually make something of your pathetic excuses for lives. So shut your cake holes unless you know what you are talking about.

I went to school with these two. They were kind people. No matter what, they did not deserve this. They had bright futures ahead of them and it's a very tragic loss. I hope that many with pray for them and their family. In loving memory of Camille Love.

god1st? My deepest condolences on your loss. There are a lot of idiots trolling these stories and they forget that there are real lives and families behind the headlines. May you find peace and comfort in the coming difficult days ahead. This murderer will be caught, and I know that is of little comfort to you now. Very tragic a young life so senselessly taken.

There is a connection between the suspect and the victim with out a doubt. They just haven't found it yet.

You people who just randomly cruise sights spewing nonsense make me sick. Cami was my grandsons aunt. Yes, believe it a complete random act of sickness and cruelty took her life. Correction, king 5, her brother was shot 3 times..praise to God he is living. When they approached the light they were giggling because Cami almost ran the red light. He was a complete sicko who took a young mans best friend and only sybling. There's a special place in hell for this man..and hate to say it the news is only 90% accurate in what they report. Wow would that every occur to some. And, here's a big suprise to you African American racist people. The shooter was not African american...ask your self who predominately lives on eastside? He will likely never be put to justice...because Sadly...he is likely an illegal. God keep you and protect you in his loving arms Cami..And,,,no she was not a mother..a young woman robbed of that chance..the baby she is holding is her brothers baby.(my grandson). l

As crazy as kevinalysia sounds, he's right about one thing. Anyone who thinks no-one would still a vehicle and use it to commit a random shooting is naive at best. Just because we're not used to it in Washington and just because we, here, don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. This kind of thing happens all the time around the country. Certain cities especially. You really want to see some s**t in Washington, go to Yakima/Tri-Cities.

Not convinced this was a random crime. The van was allegedly stolen and then used in another crime involving a shooting and ultimate death of a young woman - sounds like it was plotted out by someone to me. Police should definitely look at anyone who knew this family and that they were having a get together at that particular location and had a grudge for whatever reason. .

i doubt it was random... Who would seriously risk their lives and hate their lives that much and go and shoot a random person? No one, the ones who would risk their lives and hate their lives that much would go and shoot 4 cops or go on a rampage. This was set up. Or maybe a muder for hire? Ah hell what do i know? Just stay away from that ghetto area!

I'd like to find the suspect in this case and have a little one on one conversation with him. If he does this at random then I feel threatened, so lets meet up!

Very heartbreaking and sad situation and she was a mother (if that's her baby). Hope somone didn't set her up! Sure it wasn't her brother but they said in the article that she was getting ready to go to college so she could have had enemys and considering how young she is.

Just how are we to pay for this technology bushido1? Now think about what your asking or saying. Yes we would know where the shots was fired, but just how in the hell would that help solve just one of these shootings? They would be able to find out where and when , but they already know that it the WHO and WHY questions is what needs answered. and no shot pointer will ever answer these questions. And who would be paying for this? Are you saying tax money should pay for it? Just how could that happen in the current economy? And one last thought, it would not do any good to ban or make any kind of gun laws, becouse it does not sound like this was a situation where a law abiding gun owner used his or her gun in this terrible crime.

TACOMA would be well served by a product deployed in the worst crime areas of the country- OAKLAND, DETROIT, COMPTON called "Shotspotter" which uses GPS trajectory to pinpoint accoustic audio "fingerprints" of gunshots within 3 feet....... Its obviously an ongoing problem rooted in multi generations of Tacoma residents and based on the number of un-resolved homicides may even be attracting same types from other parts of the country....
