SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington State University has received a four-year
grant to look for causes of thinning of the cornea in the eye.
The National Institutes of Health grant will fund research by Dr. Bassem
Benjjani at WSU Spokane. The research is into keratoconus or thinning of
the cornea. A progressive and sometimes painful condition, it is
currently treated with hard lenses that reshape the cornea. The only
other treatment is a corneal transplant.
More than 40,000 corneal transplants are performed every year in the
United States.
Bejjani is a genetic researcher who will look for possible genetic
causes of keratoconus.
